Picked up all this for $200 this morning plus a 3 hour round trip. Two old Thunderbirds. Anybody have an idea about what year these are?

Two B&S flatties and two minibikes for $200?? That's like $50 apiece!!
Those Briggs are missing both carbs, and one's missing an exhaust though...
If you send me the serial numbers I can tell you what carb they need.

I took the 79cc Predator off the one bike and put the Briggs on it. I’ll make a custom intake for a Mikuni. The patina on the motor is so nice I’m not gonna touch it.

Oh, that's an outdated picture, it now has a complete air filter.

I'll have it in rows for the ease of the eye:

1. Engine 1= Model 130202 See below for specs
   Type: 0818-01(this is the type number I believe, don't know what exactly it means, but basically, configuration, color, etc.)
   Serial: 81080310(Built 08/3/1981 at assy. line and mfg. plant 10)
   Model number breakdown(this applies to both engines):
2. (13)Ci displacement, first 2 numbers, in this case both 13 Ci, so they're both 5 HP
3. (0)Basic design series, not sure what this means, but it is design series 0
4. (2)Carb/governor type: Pulsa-Jet diaphragm carburetor, unknown gov, probably mechanical
5. (0)Bearings, lube, etc.: Plain bearing/DU non-flange mount
6. (2)Starter - the last 2 means recoil

Engine #2 Type number breakdown: 4001-01 (See above under Type)
Serial #: 90051027(Built 05/10/1990 at assy. line and mfg. plant 27)


In summary, you have two engines with the same configuration, but were built at different assembly lines and manufacturing plants ~9 years apart from one another. You need to get two Pulsa-Jet carburetor setups to restore them, but of course you could go straight to modding them and put on a Mikuni.

I suggest getting the part numbers and then buying the actual parts off Ebay or Amazon.

I will probably gather all the gaskets and parts I need and go through it and freshen it up. Same thing with the old Briggs. Billet rods and governor deletes for both.

For the B&S's, yeah, but I wouldn't molest the Tecumseh or the bike it's mounted on too much, maybe just clean the bike and leave the patina (natural wear and tear) on it and just repair it not restore. It's collectible as-is. Not to mention there's people out there snatching up every horizontal-shaft Tec flathead left and right.

That's a big Tecumseh too. Might be 5+ HP. Look for a code on the blower housing as well. "H" followed by a number usually tells the horsepower rating.

HS40 55512C SER 9319B on the Tecumseh. Any body know Tecumseh codes? I actually bought three bikes yesterday. Picked up the Manco in the back for $150. It has a 3.5hp Tecumseh on it too,

Basically it entails general service procedures,(very accurate BTW) for the flathead engines from B&S, Tecumseh, and Sears Craftsman. As well as Honda OHVs. In addition it covers a few of those brands' two strokes. Possibly one of the most important parts of the manual is the torque specs!
What I did was got the manual, then printed out the parts manual for my engine(along with some other useful B&S documents, so I have basically a complete flathead guide.

Yep. HS40 = 4.0 horsepower. HS35 would be 3.5 HP and so on.
