So would your setup be good offroad, with say 500lbs of kart/driver/passenger?
11hp briggs?

Either way, I think Im gonna try this... or something similar...

With an 11hp engine, Id be a little reluctant. At least use thicker belts, I used B section.

Everything depends on gearing, tire size, drivetrain weight etc. I made sure there was a good bit of overlap between disengaging 1st and engaging second so that the rpm drop isnt too drastic. I can also switch pulleys around to achieve different gear ratios. The lowest I can go is around 8:1 in first and the highest in second is around 3.5:1. Keep in mind, thats final ratio, 8:1 with my tiny tires is alot of torque, and 3.5:1 is flying with an ungoverned clone.

In all honesty, use a torque converter. If you insist in a manual setup, find a 3 speed transmission at a junkyard. Just make sure its an aluminum case so its not to heavy.

Speaking of which, when ever Im finally able to move up to Virginia, I may have to make my self a go kart/tractor with a gearbox.

Unfortunately, a TC is out of the question. Too much money(unless for some reason I get stuck in Canada next month, then my parents are getting me one:roflol:)

We have a ancient lathe, so potentially if I get it running I could lathe out all kinds of pulleys... Even my brother may be able to lathe stuff out for me seeing as he works at a machine shop...

Ive thought about getting the transmission off some bike or quad from the junkyard, modify it to fit a small engine... But Im not sure if that would work...

Most bikes/quads have the transmissions built into the motor. Finding a separate one could be difficult.

Yeah, I wouldnt mind butchering up a non running motor. I would like to see what they have up there, and how much they ask for stuff like that...

On the otherhand... my uncle has 3 or 4 motorbikes not in use... 2 of them are 3cyl, yamaha I think... top in their class back in the day, something like 120mph... My brother thinks I could get them for a few hunnerd...

Put one of them on my minibike... I told my buddy ide do something crazy like that, just to show up his yamaha warrior... not necessarily speed... more low end would be fun...
:devil2:

Ahm gonn hurt muself one of des days!

To bad the price of scrap has been so high; around here a lot of the junk yards cleaned house over the last few years. A small 3 speed out of a 60's to early 80's mid size car would be ideal.

For the 11hp?

My dad always says about how it would take too moch power to turn the gears... We have some 50s Chrysler tranns... but they are pretty heavy. We just fished out a 4 or 5 speed from a van we junked... My dad must have stashed it in the van or something...

A car tranny wouldnt be to great for a higher speed kart but for something made for pulling, it would be pretty sweet.

i like these old mower trannys. cant put too much speed on them. but the shifter is sweet. 3 speed and reverse.

got a similar one in my 50's? 60's? sears. still works!

Hey Devino, any word on the home brew belt transmission project? Just curios since we haven't heard anything lately.:cheers2:

Well, school started, and I basically have my junior and senior year crammed into one. So, between that and getting my truck running right, Ive got no time. Hopefully Ill be able to dig up some time in the next few weeks. There isnt much left to do.:wai:
