Well its been a while. Heats gone and Ive decided to pick back up. I pulled the carb off and cleaned everything. Im gonna get some intake gaskets this weekend so I can get the engine running correctly. Brakes will be hooked up too and the centrifugal clutch put back on so the kart can be driven. After that Ill work on the tensioner and such.

Looking at the kart, I think Im gonna have to fab something up to make the engine sit angles forward. Right now the belts are a little too close to the exhaust outlet. Also, seeing the success that others have had with EMT, I may get some and add some triangulation and possibly "box in" the engine area.

im really curious to see this.

for my kart, i want a gear for towing or plowing, and the other gear for speed. but i also want reverse...

so it would be like 12:1 for reverse, then 12:1 for the towing gear, and 6:1 for the normal driving gear.

Hasnt changed since this post:

Got the pulleys and belts on. I haven't had time to make the tensioner so ill have to wait till i get back from my trip to Iceland on July 3rd.

How about like a two stage pedal for gas with two cables and one more slacked than the other. I know this is random but it was my belt tensioner revelation of the day. At first light press, it would begin to tension the low ratio and the more you press the tighter the low ratio gets and as you cross a certain point, the higher ratio begins to engage and transfer power through that belt and not the low ratio one. There could be some issues with loosening the low as high engages but nothing you couldn't solve with a brew and an hour of head scratching.

Trying to keep it "simple". I like driving stick-shift anyway.

Cut some new gaskets(I know, I know, too lazy to go get real ones) that were a whole lot better than the others I made, added gas, and... Nothing. Pulled the plug, its soaked with gas. Tested the plug, great spark. Checked the compression, about 25. Shouldnt it be about 80?? :mad2: Guess Ill be buying a new headgasket.

I took the recoil off and turned it with a drill. Started with a puff of white smoke. Engines running now. Its idling great. It bogs down with a load though, which I assume is because its running lean. Ill go to a mower shop soon for a new jet.

Soo, I was looking at the kart today. Turns out that the mounts for the jackshaft have gotten bent. Doesnt surprise me at all. More support...

A couple thoughts here- Before you get upset at the lousy compression numbers- Don't forget about the compression release for easy starting. That's sure to mangle the numbers.
Also, making your own gaskets isn't lazy. Clicking "Buy Now" and then waiting for them to arrive is lazy. Dropping the engine off at a shop is really lazy...

The engines running now, quite well actually. I just need to rejet it. I took anderkarts advice and spun the engine backwards. Worked like a charm.

Got the urge to do something constructive today. Welded a new piece of pipe in behind the engine to support the JS better. Helps alot. The kart will probably be taking back seat to yet another project: The 1979 F150 that Im buying this next friday :D

The bug deflector does look poopy on there. i thought the point of the billet grills were to make it look a little more sleak. I think it would look nice with a origional grill style.
