I recently purchased a 2 seater go-cart for the kids. After installing a motor on her maiden voyage the axle bearings were obviously bad. The previous owner has damaged both ends of the axle. What is the recommendation for a replacement axle. It looks like the housing may be damaged from previous wear. Will the northern tools axle kit work? Oh yea one last thing the diff axle, is there any companies which sell longer diff axles than 38"? Thanks in advance.

If the original owner just put a few burrs on the axle I just polish them out with a sand flap wheel on a angle grinder.

Axle repair

I have not been able to get the rims off because of damage the previous owner caused with a large hammer. I took it to a local shop because of the experience and he recommended I use a cutting torch. So I will need a new axle and what about the axle housing, or does the kit from Northern Tools work without a axle housing/metal sleeve. Thanks for the help!

How to remove the rims..

I tried to get the rims off and even took it to a local shop which offered to lend a hand. Needless to say we could not get either side off even after soaking the axle with lubricant. Any suggestions? :surrender:

Stuck

The axle is threaded at each end. On one end it is mushroomed from a previous owner which enjoys to use a hammer. On the other end I took of the nut and the rim will not slide off. I have tried lube but still there. I took it to a shop and they guy told me the only way he knew was to cut one of the ends off. So where is a good place to buy an axle and bearing kit?

On the mushroomed end is there enough good thread to cut off the mushroomed bit and still use it? The way I get the very very rusty hubs off is a sorta reverse slide hammer method, lol.

Get a peice of 1 1/4" ID fence post or house pipe (the heavy duty fence post, it needs to be beefy, 1/4 -3/8 walled stuff).

Cut a 1 1/8" slit down the side of it so you can get it on the axel, behind the hub.

Then start bashing it into the backside of the hub (make sure you dont have set screws in the hubs).

Little bit of Blaster soaking in helps it a bit. good luck

I had the same problem with only one side coming off and the other seams like it was welded together. I heated the rim up till almost red in color and used a BFH to drive the axle out. It did mushroom the end a bit but I just used a cutting wheel to remove that end and cleaned it up. No money out of pocket for the repair. May I also suggest to use some type of lube before you install any type of hub or sleeves onto the axle to allow easier removal later on. I use antiseize on all these parts.
