Ok so I bought a 140cc engine off of a friend of mine and I was told that it was in good running condition but I got it on my shifter kart and now I'm getting no spark I don't know whats wrong with it I found a wiring diagram online and copied the set up. I'm thinking it could either be that I connected the ground to aluminum, I put a aftermarket ngk spark plug wire in, or I'm not using the proper kill switch. Please help I just want to ride.

Aluminum should be fine for the ground, assuming the connection is clean. Is it grounded directly to the engine block?

I don't think the plug wire would be a problem either, given you have good contact.

Leave the kill switch right out of the equation to eliminate it. Tape the end of the kill wire to prevent accidental grounding.

Is this the diagram? http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/1039/irkwiringdiagramtx8.png

Try this one, too-

It might help to shoot a pic of the CDI showing the terminal layout and markings.

Charles- I have a known working 5-wire CDI and coil assembly from an XR100. I literally tested it 5 minutes ago. I am about to go out for the afternoon- I could maybe shoot by your place and test with it...

Yes they are the same. Chris or toy story just dropped by and had a look at it and we replaced the cdi and coil from the xr100 and we still got no spark. (he's just as clueless as me on this). The only other thing we think it could be the magneto or the wires from it

Yeah, dang- I'm stymied... I thought for sure that swapping in the CDI and coil from the XR100 would do it.

I used the XR100 wiring diagram, as pictured above. The kill wired was left disconnected, the ground went to the engine block and the (-) terminal of the coil, the trigger wire went to the trigger, the stator coil wire went to the stator coil, and the coil (+) from the CDI to the coil (+). As I said, I tested the XR100 parts before going out the door, and they did produce spark. I even provided a known working plug.

Here are the unknowns- we do not know how to test the stator coil or the trigger.

Sorry I couldn't stay long Charles, we were already late getting to where we were going. Keep me in the loop and if I come up with anything else, I'll let you know.

EDIT- I just read somewhere that it might matter which way up you install the coil- since I don't know any better and you took it off, try flipping it- you never know!

Yahhhh I got spark. Belive it or not all I did was paint a part. I painted the magneto trigger because I noticed it was coated in a red rubber seal that was peeling away so I repainted it which un grounded to trigger (I think). I tried to start it a few times but ran out of day light. I'll try some more tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

And Chris you can come pick up you cdi and coil. Or maybe I can drop it off at you're place. I wouldn't mind seeing you're race tractor and other race products?

Oh, Sweet! You solved it? GREAT! Hang on to my CDI and coil for the moment, I'll try to find a few minutes to stop by in the next few days- I need the excuse- I still want those other aluminum rims for my kart!

I found some stator test info I've quoted below.
That basic info should be the same for testing your stator. Yours just has 1 wire, so just do all the voltage/ohm tests between that 1 wire and a clean engine ground. You can Ignore the extra wires he's mentioning, those would be only be on engines equipped with a charging coil.

quote from this thread: http://www.miniriders.com/motor-tut...park-c-d-i-factory-o-r-k-without-battery.html

Make sure the pickup on the stator plate clears the magnet on the flywheel by 10 thousand's of an inch, not 10mm, and both are clean.

The stator plate has several wires coming from it, the green or black are generally earth wires, yellow red or white are generally power. The stator plate should put out around 1 – 2.5 volts from at least one of the power wires when being cranked over, if no volts are found, then the stator plate is stuffed.

Ohms testing for the stator:
The ohms reading is pretty close to 100ohms, any more or less is a sign it is on its way out, and obviously if theres nothing, then its dead.

Ok so I tested the stator and it's shot. (Just to make sure I tested it right). I'm sapossed to put the multi meter on ground and on the stator and set it to 200k?

Is there a lower range on the meter (more sensitive)?

Have you got an analog meter? I would try grounding one meter lead, setting a very low DC voltage range, and connecting the other meter led to the stator coil output lead, and spin the engine over, watching to see if the meter deflects.

I tried all the ohm settings on the multi meter and I wasn't getting a reading of 100 ohms on any. I'll try checking the voltage

Ya we did and I checked it today and the stator is getting power and the ohms. I was testing it wrong before. So now my guess is the stator trigger unless there's a way to test that
