If I had to guess a test for it, I would connect one meter lead to ground, and the other to the trigger output lead. Set the meter for the lowest voltage range, spin the crank, and look for blips on the meter. I think I would try to use an analog meter for this- I don't know if a DMM would be sensitive enough. I know that when my truck quit working a couple years ago, I had to test the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor- the Haynes manual called for an analog meter because a digital wouldn't read it.
