which is better a brake drum setup or mechanical disk brakes for a live axle cart?

im going to be using a 8hp kohler with a 12 tooth comet clutch and a 40 tooth sprocket ive been told by a few people i might ruin the clutch with this ratio and if it doesnt that it will take forever to get moving so is either true?:confused:

im in the process of building my first kart its going to be used on back alleys gravel and some dirt everyone i talked to says i shouldnt because i cant go around corners as well. i dont plan on taking any corners at full speed so is a live axle a bad idea? :confused:
