im going to be using a 8hp kohler with a 12 tooth comet clutch and a 40 tooth sprocket ive been told by a few people i might ruin the clutch with this ratio and if it doesnt that it will take forever to get moving so is either true?

Yes, you need a much lower gear ratio than that. Like 6:1 would be better.

so it would be better to go with a 60 tooth or even a 70 then right?

Yes sir! a 60 or 70 would be ok.

The 12 and 40 is asking for trouble.

40 is most likly trouble, but if you have small tires maybe not.

im going to be running 18's on the back so i dont think that is small

Definitely use the larger sprocket with 18" wheels!

I'm kinda pushing it using a 45t with 16" wheels.

i just ordered a 60 tooth threw ebay 20 bucks including shipping so it wasnt bad know all thats left is to fix the frame and assemble it!!!
