Drift Kart - aka teaching the lil dude to build

It isn't even locking up the axle, a lockup would be better then nothing. I have it set tight against the drum and still nothing. I don't think this lever has enough throw in it. Will either need a new lever or some kind of force multiplier.

I'm gonna take a look at triangulation for them. Of course, I just got all the keys in there good and now have to remove everything so I can take the bearings out before I weld. BTW, the drum brake does nothing. Haha. Gotta upgrade that to something else.

My son and his uncle were racing down the street. Gotta love 50 degrees at the end of december in Cleveland However my son spun in front of him and he had to run up on the curb (over a storm grate). A couple more drifts after that and we found a weak spot. One of the axle hangers broke free...

Action shot from tonight. I realize now why most guys run a smaller motor. The torque from the 212 = no go -> wow that's quick in an instant

It's done and test ride complete. Shaving just a smidgen off the keys was perfect. It is so much fun and yet absolutely terrifying at the same time. :) may be just a shy too much rake in the neck.

Cool thanks I'll try that. Neck welds didn't get the penetration required so I took it off and am rebuilding the neck again. Practice makes perfect I guess

I tried gentle hammer as well and no go. Chromoly axle and aluminum hubs, no paint. :( ~ jake

One major question tho - how in the world do you get the keys to fit? I cut the key stock into the 4 pieces I need and ground/rounded the corners down. It fits fine into the axle by itself (slides right into the slot). It fits fine into the hubs by itself (hand fit). But I cannot make the...

Here is me notching out the neck/backbone brace (trial and grind and trial and grind and...) How it sits right now.... Son got some major virus today so he was pretty sick. Gonna get the final set of bolts and stuff with him and he and I will go through tighting everything up.

So the frame is about 2" wider then it probably should be in each side, but I'll build the next one better. :) All major fab is pretty much done at this point. Welded on the neck and backbone brace. Also fabled up the brake mount and drilled/cut the motor mount holes (can slide for chain...

Made some progress today. Got the frame squared and welded up. Once I make sure my heights are all good, I'll weld on the neck next.

Got the motor and board for "rimz" measured out. Any thoughts on better location for motor? Fore or aft of the axle? I see most everybody puts it aft, but not sure if there jus a great reason that is better or not.

Got the axle today. Did a parts check and put together for mockup. Had Lil Dude drill out some blocks to simulate wheel height. Then checked the on the floor measurements. Also measured angle for neck. Gonna be set at 32°

He's a big boy. Probably gonna be bigger then his old man (my dad is almost 6'9" and he is on target to meet or exceed that). The bench with the drill press is 38" high, and he is standing on a case of amsoil to operate the press. :)

Drift Kart - aka teaching the lil dude to build

About 2 months ago, a good friend (also known as Grandpa Jerry) offered up an electric drift kart for a 100 bucks. Since my son currently is enjoying that, I am going to build this frame to fit my 6'6" frame (more importantly my 37" inseam). I will likely also setup some sort of moveable seat...

Next was the final removal of the neck and cleanup. Cut off wheel, grind down the welds on the bench grinder, clean up with a flap wheel. He helped with the bench grinder a little bit, but he was more comfortable with vacuuming up the mess after. Frame is 3/4 schedule 40 (1.050 OD). I may...
