Drift Kart - aka teaching the lil dude to build

So I have been wanting to teach my 6 year old and he has been wanting to learn. Where better to start then with a drift trike. I have been bouncing this around for over a year, but time and money never lined up together.

Old bike frame (donated by coworker) being cut down.

Teaching him how to operate the drill press. Making a mockup with the bolt pattern for the Predator motor (yet to be purchased)

Next was the final removal of the neck and cleanup. Cut off wheel, grind down the welds on the bench grinder, clean up with a flap wheel.

He helped with the bench grinder a little bit, but he was more comfortable with vacuuming up the mess after.

Frame is 3/4 schedule 40 (1.050 OD). I may build a new frame in the future with 1" DOM 120 wall.

Here is the neck ready to go.

About 2 months ago, a good friend (also known as Grandpa Jerry) offered up an electric drift kart for a 100 bucks. Since my son currently is enjoying that, I am going to build this frame to fit my 6'6" frame (more importantly my 37" inseam). I will likely also setup some sort of moveable seat arrangement so that Lil Dude can also ride it. He is already almost 4.5' tall, so he will grow into it quickly.

Ordered the axle assembly and clutch from BMI today. Will probably get the motor in a couple of weeks. Not sure about wheels yet, they are way more expensive even used then expected. I am considering the hillbilly "wooden disks in a pvc sleeve" to start that will be bolted thru to the 3 bolt race hubs.

He's a big boy. Probably gonna be bigger then his old man (my dad is almost 6'9" and he is on target to meet or exceed that). The bench with the drill press is 38" high, and he is standing on a case of amsoil to operate the press. :)

Got the axle today. Did a parts check and put together for mockup.

Had Lil Dude drill out some blocks to simulate wheel height. Then checked the on the floor measurements. Also measured angle for neck. Gonna be set at 32°

Got the motor and board for "rimz" measured out.

Any thoughts on better location for motor? Fore or aft of the axle? I see most everybody puts it aft, but not sure if there jus a great reason that is better or not.

I think on a "drift" trike the put the engine aft the axle. for handling or drifting characteristics. You know, the further back the more "slinging" momentum.

Yes most motorized drift trikes are built w/ the engine behind/below the axle... More than likely for clearance reasons and CoG... as well as what Chancer mentioned,"the more "slinging" momentum." Its true putting the engine behind the axle is a 'no~no' (on a kart) but, seems to work when the lack of traction is in the equation...

...here is mine, the first one I made. I tried the behind the axle setup, at first, but after great deliberation and a free TC... I decided to place the engine above the axle.
