I need a new brake band for my kart, and all of them come with a "brake pin"? What is this used for, all i know is i take out the 2 cotter pins, remove old band, attach new.. So what is this "pin" for?

Ok, was putting on a new sprocket, and i decided to take off the clutch to oil the bearing... It's a maxtorque or something max, can't see it to well ANYWAY I took it off the engine, put it nice nice on the seat, and what happens, my son sits on the seat, and the clutch goes all over the place...
