So my kids have a Mudhead 208R. The belt shredded and I replaced it with the exact same belt. I didn’t do anything else to it. Now it will not get up to top speed. It won’t ever get to the “2nd gear”. Any and all help would be much appreciated!
Thank You

Did you clean your whole driven unit? Or maybe didn’t put it back together correctly

What belt?

The only belt I see. It’s the main belt I guess. Goes from the clutch to the variator? No I didn’t clean anything. I just know it went from going 25mph to about 10-12 after putting the new belt on

And it’s back together just like it came apart.

Sorry as in “what belt” I meant which belt did you purchase, it could be an incorrect size

Can you pop up a picture of the belt? Just for reference for everyone, as well as the whole tc assembled

I’ve been trying to attach a pic but can’t get it to work for some reason. I’ll keep trying. The cart is a Hammerhead Mudhead 208R

Hmm, not as much angle as would be useful in that pic.
Are you sure you put it all together correctly?
Also, are you sure it's the TC? You may have smacked something, or messed something up, or maybe bad luck has just struck your buggy.

Also, try jacking up the rear wheels, and revving the engine all the way out, make sure it changes gear.

It is hard to tell from that pic. Does your torque converter have a flat side nearest the engine? What I'm getting at is do you know if it's a 30 series torque converter?

Yes it has a flat side closest to the engine. The belt had a angled side and flat. I put the flat towards the engine.
Is it possible that a new/tight belt would make it not go into overdrive?

Well if it was too short it would probably want to move as soon as you started it. But would probably still hit top speed. Maybe it's too long. Measure the distance between the shafts that hold the pulleys. Center to center. How do you know it was the same belt could you see the numbers on the old one?

Yes I could see that it says 725 on it but my original had B instead of C. But I can’t find anywhere to order a specific A,B,C...etc. they are either 669 or 725. No other options that I’ve found. What actually allows it to shift into overdrive? Certain RPM?

Yes it's all centrifugal force that makes them work. You may have something stuck or dirty but just trying to make sure you have the right belt first. As my dad would always say start simple and work your way from there. You probably have the right belt but just want to make sure before you start messing with other parts. Not that it's ever a bad idea to clean your torque converter.

My next step is to clean it for sure. After that I don’t know. That’s the only belt I can find for that cart. I feel like it’s right but I’ll measure it. It did fit tight and was tough to get on.

Another question would be could something specific cause the belt to shred? The go cart has pretty low hours

The belt shouldn't be hard to get on. If it was just a really cheap belt, the sheaves have damage on them or incorrect alignment could be the cause of shredding a belt. Or if you are smoking it up trying to go up hills to steep lol. From the pic it looks as if the alignment is ok

I can't believe noone has asked you to verify the TC make and then measure the center to center distance between driver and driven. This then gives you the tools to make sure you get the right belt. Look at these 2 links below. The first helps you ID your TC, and the second gives you charts to figure out what belt you need
