I've got the sidecover off now, here's some pictures!

The oil that came out was like sludge and completly black :toetap05.

Just got to get a rod dipper and make up a new mount for the carby.

Prepare for a rant on how crap the inlet system is.

And you going to have to get a flywheel right? Those aluminum flywheels on lawnmower engines only act as a fan really, its the blade that acts as a flywheel. BTW in your earlier post you said the engine was kinda hard to start and had a backfire, have you checked the key? it is probably partly sheared.

its the blade that acts as a flywheel.
True enough that blade provides most (but not all) of the inertia required for a smooth start.
I use the lighter flywheels religiously. Faster take-offs are realized.
Starting can be somewhat 'funny' and requires a little more authority when pulling through the compression/ignition cycle.
Worth the compromise IMO.

They would if they understood inertia as I do.
Typically, horizontal shaft engines come with the heavier flywheels only (very few exceptions).
Typically, GoKarts use horizontal shaft engines.
Why do race engines use lighter flywheels??

Blammo! I would also offer that the horizontal engines we use for karts were not factory designed for racing karts, but instead, steady-speed industrial implement loads under controlled conditions...
I don't generally demand a lightning take-off speed from my generator, but I certainly want it to rev away steadily under sometimes rapidly changing current demands.

well, i still don't understand why nobody uses a lawnmower flywheel as a performance part vs a lightened flywheel.

Availability is one reason.
I've been doing it since the late '60's. Just have to know what to look for.

I do thought experiments and carry things to an imaginary extreme.
For example:
Imagine how well a small engine (5hp) would operate with a 200 lb. flywheel.
Now imagine this same engine with 1/20th the weight to swing around.
There is an obvious gain.
Takes a lot of power (and time) to get a heavier flywheel up to speed.

so are you saying that if i put my lawnmower flywheel on my 5hp it will turn more rpm?

It will essentially have the same affect as a billet flywheel, except it wont be as shiny, and may be a little heavier (no clue what a billet flywheel weighs).

One reason people would opt for a billet wheel over a push mower one, is the whole "exploding flywheel" scare, and of course the "common knowledge" that an engine wont run right with lighter push mower fly, which of course is not true..
