Right now, my kart has a 3.33:1 gear ratio. Im gonna change the ratio to give me more low end power, but i dont want to loose too much speed. I'm thinking of removing the governor on my clone, but i dont want to blow it up. It sounds like i would need to add new valve springs(18 lbs) and new pushrods. Is there any thing else?

on clone engine u might want replace the the fly wheel to billet one and change out the conrod for arc rod and maybe do a timing key. i had the stock pushrods in before with 18lb springs seemed ok and i was revin the thing up to 6000 rpm.

depending on who you talk to, you do/don't need the 18lb springs when you remove the gov'na. why would you replace the pushrods? unless you are adding a bigger carb, cam, raising the compression significantly or advancing your timing, you do not need to upgrade the rod or fly. a header and better flowing airfilter are the cheapest easiest power upgrades. you will probably have to re-jet the carb when you swap out the air filter. the 140 emulsion tube will help you on bottom and mid range. or you could experiment and seal over one or two holes in your own e-tube to achieve the same. if you have the thick head gasket, switch to the thinner ones. it will give you more torque. if i am not mistaken, compression=torque, flow=speed. you are geared for speed so add some torque. if i am wrong, others will correct.

why not up grade the pushrods... if your goin with bigger valve springs and a hardened cam ul either bend thos suckers or just grind em down to nothin

I don't even think I'm gonna bother on this one, although most of you know my opinion on modding any industrial engine past removed governor and porting.

3.33:1? I'm amazed it'll move from a stop at all! Do you have a CVT helping out, or what?

No torque converter or anything. The acceleration is surprisingly good, but it cant climb a hill worth a s&*t. I wanna take it off roading on my uncles farm so i want some low end power(but there are some good roads to go fast on too).

You guys gotta understand where im coming from though, dollar to hp you cant beat a motorcycle or sled engine. I just cant see spending a few hundred to modify an engine to make 10 or 15 horse when you could get an engine with easily over 30hp AND a built in transmission, or a cvt.

But whatever floats ur boat i guess.

Dollar to power ratio is unbelievable when you drop in an engine made to go fast from the get go.

Well if you look at it like that, why would you get a sled motor when you can get a v8 motorcycle? Its for simplicity. Theses little engines are VERY simple and easy to work on. Also parts are fairly cheap. The same CANNOT be said about a bike or sled motor. If you want to go fast you get a corvette. If you want to have fun WHILE you go fast, you get a minibike and mod it.

A v8 bike motor is expensive.

A 2 stoke sled engine is about as simple as you get, 5 moving parts in a twin(not counting carbs, bearings, or an oil pump), working on a OHC bike engine is no different than a automobile engine. You don't need to buy much in the way of parts for such an engine, very few people wear em out under normal use and maintenance. That's why some parts are expensive, they aren't needed much.

Well, the GS-500 motor I'm using has been made, basically unchanged, for over 20 years. Parts are DIRT cheap. The same can be said for any number of bikes. Not to mention that the whole engine (with ALL ancilliaries and brakes for my kart) cost me around $250

There is a reason why every single person who has a bike/sled engine says they are the only way to go.

this is true sidewinder pilot. i have a '95 gsxr750 that is modded. i am scared to put that much power on such a small light frame. 118hp stock. no thanks. a 250-400 (older)street bike maybe. the shifter karts, (125cc) i hear run 150mph. nope, not me either. not unless they are built like a tank and have fenders for racing.

It's fairly easy to put a big engine on a frame, but is the frame able to handle it and be safe.

Ah, but why not a 125cc air cooled motorcycle engine? It should fit wherever a 6.5hp would, and an old one would make around 8-15hp. It's just that they come with a gearbox, manual clutch, and they rev more. Just more suited to karting in general.

It seems to me that most people go for the 6.5 because they perceive it as cheaper and easier than a motorbike engine, when neither is necessarily true. Less work, perhaps, but not always easier.
