The 6.5 clone is dirt cheap and drops in where your oil burner briggs was sitting, that's why most people like em. Racers love em because for what it cost to rebuild a flathead, they can buy a new engine for not much more and bolt on their performance parts.

university? universality, maybe or versatility. i saw some of the videos of guys touching tires at speed. he!! no!! i hate being injured. if i lived somewhere where i could get up to that speed without big bumps or trees, maybe.

You don't have to get to max speed. If you had a bike engine you would just back off at the fastest you're comfortable with, and still have kickass acceleration. I know I'm not going to hit max speed in the Sidewinder any time soon (130-140kph theoretical)

what does the gs5 say on it's speedo? should do at least 90mph. as to fast acceleration, if the tires are spinning, it's time to gear up. if i try to get on the gsxr even in second gear , it breaks lose and spins until i quit giving her gas. kind be pretty gnarly sometimes.

Ah, but why not a 125cc air cooled motorcycle engine? It should fit wherever a 6.5hp would, and an old one would make around 8-15hp. It's just that they come with a gearbox, manual clutch, and they rev more. Just more suited to karting in general.

I'm going for a similar thing. My next project (whenever I get to it!) is going to be powered by an '88 Yamaha XV250 I scored cheap. It's an air-cooled V-twin, 5-speed, 4-stroke. Factory stock is about 21hp @8k, so it won't be a monster. But I think the V-twin will sound neat and I get a manual clutch and gears, which is what I want.

You guys gotta understand where im coming from though, dollar to hp you cant beat a motorcycle or sled engine. I just cant see spending a few hundred to modify an engine to make 10 or 15 horse when you could get an engine with easily over 30hp AND a built in transmission, or a cvt.

But whatever floats ur boat i guess.

if i can quote the famous words of carroll shelby "horsepower sells cars, torque wins races" horsepower is a small factor in everything but it isnt everything

Torque doesnt matter as much when you have a gearbox, and a manual clutch, along with an engine which can hit nearly 10k. My kz400 engine only has 25ft lbs of torque, but it the gearbox allows me to hit 80mph by 6th gear and still spin the tires all the way to 3rd or 4th.

In first i have a 14.18:1 ratio between Crank and Axle, by 6th that steps down to a 4.922:1 ratio.

You cant compare an industrial engine to a bike engine, thats like comparing a Geo Metro to chevelle with a blown 454.

But, not everyone can handle the awesome power of a bike engine.
