Go for it, gear it a little lower than you normally would. I tried once because i completely burnt out the clutch on my scrap kart (and then welded the drum to the shoes lol). It didnt work to well because my gearing was way too high (6:1 with 21" tires).

You have to push start it like a sprint car. Neat idea if you have help. Downside is you have poor acceleration because you dont have the clutch to slip and stall the engine up to take off rpm where your torque curve is peaking.

And you cant stop.... no like really you cant unless you have good enough brakes to stall the motor.

What you normally do (if theres only one person, other wise you get a friend to push you until it goes) is lift the back end of the kart up and run as fast as you can while holding the back end in the air then drop it and try and jump in while its going along, sounds fun hay :surrender:

You just wire the kill switch so its in reach .

big in the front or small in the back, or it doesn't matter???

Other way round, small on the front or big on the back. I would prefer small on the front so I could have more ground clearance but you would probably have to put a big one on the back anyway, perhaps use a jackshaft? Depends on what you use your kart for, road or off road?

I use direct drive sprockets frequently...especially when testing drive lines for weaknesses or I'm not ready to invest in another clutch.
If your brakes cannot easily stall stall the engine, I would suggest better brakes.
I use band brakes as well as internal expanding. Either set-up has no problem locking wheels to immediately kill the engine.
Using direct drive offers a different driving experience and takes a little getting used to. Sometimes I prefer it.

Start on grass or gravel. Lift the back of the kart onto a paint can to get the drive wheel(s) off the ground. Start engine. Rev the pee out of it. Shift body weight to tip kart off of paint can. Hopefully it doesn't stall.
