Clean metal = Clean Welds. Get that metal ground clean and you'll get better welds. The cleaner the metal, the better the ground which helps as well. A master fabricator at a motorcycle company showed me these tricks years ago. Granted, there are other tricks as well, but good clean metal is critical. Also, use good 1018 CR steel. Junk HR steel, and plated steel does not weld well.

true about HR steel.. you can take a flap wheel and get the slag off before you weld HR steel. but the flux core should burn through.

try a fillet weld.. now thats the most common weld. try and make sure the weld is convex, it will help you develop better welding skill (if you ever have to hold a spec.)

but try Higher AMPS lower speed wire.

take two pcs and try to weld them into a 90 degree angle pc then beat it to death with a hammer see how strong it is.

but try Higher AMPS lower speed wire.

not to be an a s s here but in semi-automatic welding amperage is directly proportionnal to the wire speed... so more wire = more amps and less wire = less amp... semi machines are CV (constant voltage)

its all a combination of voltage and wire speed that give you a final amperage...

in this case i would only crank the voltage... but again to properly determine if you have the proper setting its always better with the gun in you hand! lol its hard over the internet

Clean metal = Clean Welds. Get that metal ground clean and you'll get better welds. The cleaner the metal, the better the ground which helps as well. I usually clean my metal with brake cleaner after it's ground to remove all grease / oil as well. You'll get even less imperfections. A master fabricator at a motorcycle company showed me these tricks years ago. Granted, there are other tricks as well, but good clean metal is critical. Also, use good 1018 CR steel. Before you weld again, please read this article regarding brake cleaner and welding. It's worse than welding galvinized steel.
