Well we suffered through another scare. I should get a life.

EZ is the forum MVP! 🥇
Got the 503 error in the last 24 hours. Before that it was a white screen with a hopeful “try again later” message.

We need to get a lasso on this. I checked other Xenforo sites but they were up, just not this one.

No idea. Not sure if it's Robert doing these hard resets, XenoForo, or who. I mean, who goes out of there way to attack a very niche small forum? Most of last week, another forum I'm on, also uses XenoForo, had to do a human verification thing, because it saw a spike in visitors. Normal day is like 4,000. For most of last week, peak was like 50,000.

Yeah I'm trying to post more often. Even if it means I necro post on my own thread with my project that's been on ice for a while now.

I try to "contribute" here almost every day. If the community doesn't want my input I can leave. Seems pretty clear here lately that this forum is an almost inexhaustible resource for people who are interested in go karts and go kart related information. There is really nothing else on the www that compares. Currently working on trying to survive until I can retire, which is probably never.

I am currently trying to build a set of screen doors (out of wood). First set I built lasted 7 years before they got the rot. If anyone wants to syphon off my brain juice on this subject, let me know and I can go "off-topic" where appropriate.

This next set is tentatively going to be cedar, yes. Glue laminated, ripped and sized pickets actually. You must be a "svengolly"

E Z, how close to retirement are you? It's definitely worth the wait. Once I turned
50 I started thinking about it often. After 55 I'm sure I thought about it every day.
Bailed out 2 weeks after my 65th birthday. Hope you make it.

I don’t think you can necropost on your own thread. You’re just coming back to a slow project, it happens. And on that note fellas, if you have a way-dormant project thread and it’s locked (old forum software auto-locked it after 6 months or a year of inactivity I think), I can unlock it for you.

I have a strange affection for necroposting and old thread revival, I know it’s “wrong”. :surrender:

Just saw this thread at the top of the forum contents... its revival is purposeful.

As a newcomer, I have found the content to be valuable. For those that have read my intro, you know I am a gearhead. But my knowledge of karts is next to nothing (changing quickly, thank you). I too see the progressive change in youth and the cause is parenting. I raised 3 girls, 2 almost completely on my own. While they are girlie girls, with their make-up, fancy nails and frilly dresses; they can also change their own oil, do a brake job, are skilled with guns, and love to play football in the backyard with Dad. With them all on their own now, I have been entertaining the boys and girls in my cul-de-sac with the kart. These kids had no idea anything like this existed. Why? Their parents are working. I think most of them are involved in the tech sector... they spend their days in front of a computer. When and if I see them outside, they are staring at their phone. That's what these kids know. Introduce them to the experience of something, anything, that engages the senses beyond visual and the "kid" inside wakes up. I am witnessing this personally. They hang around waiting for my garage door to open. They want to pull the cord and get the engine started. They want to know how it works and of course, drive it. They play rock/paper/scissors to determine who rides first, second, third, so-on. The look on their faces when they pull up to the curb makes me laugh out loud. I'm pretty sure the parents are getting requests for karts and I am scheming to start my own little kart club, make a track out of pylons at the local empty parking lot and hold time trials. We'll see.

So yeah, keep it going. I'll make an attempt to do my part.

Wicked Daddy. Your post # 134 I couldn't agree with more. The problem isn't the kids, it's their gen X know nothing ( at least mechanically ) parents. My own kids are of that generation. 49 & 52. One knows as much as me, the other is a key board junkie. A lot of middle aged men today don't own tools, or know how to use them. How are their kids ever going to learn. You are doing a great service for the youth of America. I'll also bet you're having a lot of fun yourself. Enjoyed your post.

EZ, how come another 20. Are you way upside down financially? Not really any of my business. Have you worked for wages most of your life? I worked for 51 years total, 45 of them in Drywall. Not really a lucrative career. Social security is about 2/3 rds. Of our income for my wife and I. It's more than I ever thought it would be. Not even close to wealthy, but quite comfortable, and that's in California. 78 is awfully old to be working full time. Hope you are wrong on your estimation.

Slowly dying over the years. I don't know the stats but I think the DIYGK forum heyday was in the early 2000's ( that would be 20+ years ago or so) and it has dwindled and tapered off slowly but significantly. Is it due to BS social media and more advanced video games and/or video game culture? People sitting on their duffs all day and all night instead of wrenching and riding..? It IS neat though to see the level of engagement in the older threads here.

Fecesbook Groups and other social media have certainly stolen the forum thunder perhaps, but ugh, it's not vastly better on social media I don't think, it's just "convenient" for the phone crowd. I've seen some of those Groups and posting on a FB Group just seems like utter garbage because it is geared for a 5 minute attention span and endless scrolling. The endless scrolling and clicking you have to do to find your desired content (or having to click to see all replies over and over and over again) gives me the blahs.
facts man

I agree. The forum was at its busiest late 2000's to about 2015 when i started seeing a drop off. I myself and not on the forum as much as i used to be. I used to make stuff for my daughter who is now out of the house.

I do think that the youth of today aren't as outdoorsy as they used to be
I'm a 16year old and I love riding my bike.........when it works
