CVT Cover gunked up!

While in the process of inspecting the variator, belt and clutch, when i opened the cover, I was surprised with all this gunk inside! All the gunk and black fluid was leaking out the bottom nipple. Isn't it supposed to be bone dry? Does anyone have any insight on why this happened? I then cleaned things up a bit. Waiting on the cover gasket to come in. Thanks in advance!

Supposed to be basically dry.

What is the "composition' of the gunk? I'm guessing one part is belt material but could the other be merely water?
I suspect it is oil so you may be looking at replacing the seals around the shafts.

it's almost like watery grease? sludge? the consistency of the black fluid was more watery than oily. are the seals around the shafts easy to do? thanks for your input

I posted on your other thread. You might have a bit of a oil leak or seepage as posted above by Hellion. But the gunky belt dust is normal. Getting the driver and the driven clutches aligned PERFECTLY will help ( but not eliminate ) belt dust.

thank you for the input. i replaced bot the variator and clutch and belt and made sure they were inserted as far into the casing as possible..

Those belts get hot then turn gooey after a while. Keep your tires inflated, don't jam the gas pedal to the floor and get premium belts. Asking a belt to drive those huge buggies is asking a lot. Try not to overwork the clutch or belt.

I've worked on and sold a few of these machines, most of them had melted belts. Seems to be a poorly designed cooling setup. I quit dealing with them. Too heavy to move around, hard to start if they sit for a while, electrical problems. They're fun to ride when they're working okay but a PIA when they break down.

thanks for your input and your suggestion, i am still all new to these small engines.

thanks for the link. good read. luckily for me, replacing the variator and sliders and clutch solved the smoke coming from the rear snorkel and the delayed forward movement.

Explains why a lot of the older CVT transmissions had a cooling fan built into the top of the driven clutch... or one of the rotating assemblies...

Looks like i will have to open up the CVT cover again. Not sure why the kart won't stay running now. Keeps dying. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.

Is it running fine now? What happened to the spark plug, was it gunked up?
yes, it's running fine, the spark plug was indeed gunked up. But now i have another problem. Changed out the variator with new rollers and runs takes off fine with low torque. But after a few runs, it seems like it takes a little bit longer to move the kart and starts to rev higher. Any ideas? thanks!

Belt probably getting hot. Mine does it.

Someone already mentioned premium belts, or perhaps those made with a tougher rubber compound.

Would a …..premium belt do good-er?

To expound on post #11, the Comet and Max Torque manufacturers knew that belts got hot and so put a cooling fan onto the end of the driver unit (the one on the engine’s pto) and it kept the air circulating in there but I don’t know how effective it is. The ’there’ of course refers to the enclosed environment that the TC cover provided. I don’t see the fans anymore much less a cover in photos and videos, but there is some merit to running the TC without a cover for maximum cooling despite the hazard of some girl’s hair getting caught in it and losing part of her scalp as a result :ack2:

I know this is not a Comet or Max Torque TC/CVT and a TC/CVT fan is (probably) not an option. Also just because the TC appears and probably is unaltered and the same as it left the factory, it doesn’t mean it was perfectly aligned and optimal from the factory. Any offset or misalignment between the two pullets will generate excess heat and melt the belt in short order……
