Did you replace the shaft seals?
And that silicone mess looks suspect.
no, i haven't replaced any seals and it's gone back to leaking that black gunk again. Are the seals hard to replace? When i replaced the variator and rollers, it ran great, took off fairly quick, now after a few drives, it's slowed down again.

You might be able to replace them by digging them out and pressing in new ones. Sometimes running a screw in it and using that to pull on works.
Can you tell which side is leaking? I believe there's a gearbox on the output side that needs gear oil. So either side could be culprit.
That "bigger the glob, better the job" silicone is probably where the previous plumber tried to stop the leak.

Let me see if this is true.
You had loss of power and smoking.
You open it up and it's all goo ball.
You throw new parts in.
It works till it slimed it again.
Now you are back in there again.

It will quit leaking when it runs out of oil or you fix the leak.

I've said from the get go that the main shaft seal is probably leaking. I linked a video of someone changing said seal.
I mentioned the orange silicon job looks suspicious. Could need a gasket too.

Take a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner. I prefer the carb and choke stuff. Clean and dry everything really well. Run the engine a bit. A short ride. Then go see where the leak is comming from.

i haven't opened it back up yet, but it looks like the seal replacement worked. last time, after a few rides, i could see it was leaking gunk from the drain tube and see it on the garage floor. as of yesterday, no leaks. my son did tell me yesterday that when he came to a stop sign, the engine cut off. i wonder if it was to do with the loss of oil all this time? Thanks!
