CV Shafts

[Master Hack]

Anyone have any experience with CV shafts? good? bad? ugly?
I need to upgrade the axle shafts on Franken buggy. I'm not happy with the junk shafts that I cobbled together from old driveshafts.
The old adage "ya can't make chicken soup from chicken s**t" has proven true once again. Egor balanced them and trued them, but the operating angle is purdy serious, and that creates some vibration problems among others. The angle is extreme due to the short length of the shafts.
We found some FWD CV axle shafts that are not horribly expensive and I think we are going to give it a try.
Looking for tips/tricks/ideas/experiences.
Jokes, harassment, thread tangents, hijacking and criticism are always welcome, as usual!

Well, considering front drive cars been using them go over 50 years I think it’s safe to say they will work. Unless you manage to screw them up somehow.

I'd say Denny is right, those have hold up to more power than is going through Franken buggy, for lotsa miles. If your really worried then pick some up from a "hot hatch" but you shouldn't need those.

Actually I was mistaken, Cords had front wheel drive back in the 1930s. So that makes it about 90 years! But I’m confident in you if there’s a way to make them not work I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Then poor Igor will have to fix it.

...& the other end probably connects to...the wheel...maybe

Yeah, the map is purdy clear from point A to B,
But maps dont show road closures, pot holes,
Flat tires and other complications....

been busy looking at plans, getting ideas and trying to figger out the best way to screw this up. An old racer buddy then sent me this.


he refuses to say where this came from, but says some detailed plans are on the way.

CV's are a good way to go. The biggest thing to remember is angle. If you have too much they can come apart. Obviuosly some cvs can take a lot more angle than others, that usually equates to more angle=more money. I used cvs on my setup and used cheap/heavy Chevy s10 cv's i think 1985. readily available, and inexpensive. They are heavier than say porsche 930 and cant give the same droop/angle. I had a local plasma cutter make flanges to bolt my cv's to and then i drilled them and welded them to my axle.
