E Kart Build

I’ve just got hold of this

746BD27A-AEF3-4D39-A731-5826624071C4.jpeg
As it’s going to be used on the driveway/garden decided to go with an electric motor. Have built many motorbikes in my time but I’m a complete newbie when it comes to electric motors so expect lots of dumb questions.

1st is what reputable motors are there to purchase in the UK. There’s lots on eBay etc. So far research has thrown up the Mophorn 1800W/48V Brushless DC but I can’t find anywhere in the UK selling it.

A high speed racing kart for yard kart duty; like the opposite of my kart. I have had good luck with Motenergy motors.

Kool kart, kinda looks like Excalibur 😉

Check out the build thread, it has lots of info you may be interested in. :)
(1) 2020 - Excalibur Electric Racing kart | DIY Go Karts

Alfa Wheels has lots of stuff (where I get my motors & stuff)

For a first E-build, i'd probably go 48V 1,000W
Here is a kit (motor, controller, key switch & throttle) for ~$100.00 (& yes, they ship to Europe)
1000 W 48V electric scooter motor kit w BASE+control box key lock & Throttle | eBay
Will have a good read of that thread later 👍🏻

Welcome Rutterc85 ! :)
Family on my Mum's side, was from Cambridge.

It's cool to have ''another'' vintage race Kart elect. conversion project up here . (y)
Have 2 of them in the works myself. ;)

So I’ve located this motor, my only query is (excuse the ignorance still new to motors etc) the shaft looks rather short?

It looks like that motor was designed to "mate" up with another component. (transmission, pump etc.)
I don't see how you could add a drive sprocket to it, without building a "sprocket tower" (with a bearing) to support a sprocket.

Also, do you have a 36V 1,200W speed controller to control that motor?

That was my assumption. As for a controller I was going to source that once I found a motor. Would it be wiser to source a controller and motor together then?

Generally get a better deal doing that,, & you will know it is matched. ;)

Starting off with a "matching" motor & controller is usually best 😉

Let the dudes @ the factory "figure it out" & "do the math"
...'cause they have lots more info available (like Ohm's, resistances, tolerances, max Voltage/Amp values etc.)

* I started off "miss-matching" stuff way back when
...& it was an uphill battle
...& if it wasn't for my buddy Alex aka Sid...

(where is Sid? he's been kinda quiet lately)

That motor is missing the gear reduction piece that bolts to the face where the shaft is. It is supposed to have a 13:1 speed reduction to the output. I would get a different motor.

Right no more trying to save pennies then and end up costing me more in the long run.

have had a British electrical engineering company get in touch that build motors and controllers specifically for go karts, have given them the spec and awaiting a quote

If you want to go ''cheap'', with it being basically just a yard kart,,
The MY1020 - ''36v 1000w ''brushed'' set up combo w/ controller,, are pretty darned cheap, & fairly powerful & reliable also,, plus ''very easy'' to plug & play together.
I had one of those set ups that I reworked,,, & it was pretty impressive on power , efficiency ,, & run time.
That ''4'' brush 1020, is just about bullet proof,, & the controller,,, you don't have the ''bazillion'' wires coming out of it like on most brushless ones.
You could then wire 3 - ''cheap'' 15ah ''or so'' 12v - LA ''lead acid'' batt's. in series.
You would probably want to go ''around', 8.5 -1 gearing,, depending also on weight of rider.

My 2 pence . ;)

I appreciate it 👍🏻

The MY1020 seem hard to come by in the UK at the moment from my searches. Postage and taxes will then be more than the label proce

You can get them thru Ali express.
A lot of far east vendors thru that site offer free ship also,, ''at least to the States''.
Don't have a clue on how your taxes work though …..
Maybe check out E - bay also ??
