Hey guys I have a manco quicksilver, had for years and no issues till last week , it’s leaking oil thru the carb and smoking real bad. What is the issue ? And is it worth fixing or should I replace the engine?

Sounds like a worn valve guide.

I can't remember if Tecumseh motors used replaceable valve guides or not... I really don't deal with them much.

I know I've heard if people boring them out and using Briggs and Stratton valve guide bushings (parts availability problem maybe?).

Boring and installing a valve with a thicker stem may also be an option.

OR....intake valve is not seating...

Could be, but there shouldn't be oil in the upper cylinder to come back out the intake. The rings would have to be shot as well for that much oil to be in there.

Or... You have WAY too much oil in the crankcase.

Or if your rings are shot and you haven't changed the oil in aeons, there could be enough fuel leaked into the oil to thin it out where it's leaking past the valve guides and/or piston rings. Contaminate oil would also accelerate wear on said parts.

And I saw you mentioned starting fluid in that other guy's thread. If you were manually holding the throttle plate open and hit it with starting fluid, you could have easily over-revved it, which on a stock Tecumseh is a death sentence for the valves.

It's worse than that...he said his throttle stuck wide open right before this happened.

Who wants to tell him?

So I’m screwed? Cheaper and faster to replace the engine?

Faster, yes. Cheaper, maybe, maybe not.

Start with a compression test. If you get at least 60 PSI, the problem is most likely not valve seating or piston rings. 75 psi should be ideal, but depending on the age of the engine and the hours it has on it, >60 psi would be acceptable.

When you said blowing oil out the carburetor, is it definitely coming out through the carburetor, or is it coming out the crankcase breather, which in turn vents to the carburetor?

I ask my buddy, who claims to be a Mechanic at a Ford dealership, questions about my Fusion all the time. He doesn't know much. LOL. But to be fair, the Duratec engine I have is basically a throw away engine. Used engines are like $800. Probably costs that much to replace a head gasket at the dealership. I wanted to know about roller finger followers and the variable valve timing. ???? I gave him my Teckasheema engine and he wouldn't have been able to get it started if I didn't show him how.

Thanks, but that was Anickode, not me that suggested high oil level.
