Had a day to kart.
Last night I swapped tires for S&G's. Well more to see how the lower gearing is effected by tire size.

The predator pulled the 22s better than the briggs, spinning on take off. After the gear switch the briggs could finally light up the 22s.

I'm sure once I regear the predator kart it's gonna be nice.

So back to today. Swapped the 18s back on to the briggs kart and installed the Port, polish, milled head.

Remember I'm still on a stock exhaust but have a round slide Micuni, stock cam, and timing. That stuff will come slowly.

The buttdyno shows that it did add a few ponies. I was kinda let down as far as performance goes when regearing. The head brought back that and then some.

I'm sure an exhaust pipe will add a bunch too, so it's next.

I also measured the volume of the head before I put in on. 32cc. I'll measure the removed, stock head in a few for comparison.

Took a video of a few laps today. Could only go about 80% driving one handed and holding the camera. Can't get good body English to really slide the corners. I'll post that next.

As I pulled the kart in the shop I noticed this.
Cracked just a little more than half way around.
I knew it was inevitable.....

I love it too. Got 40 acres total. 5 around the house and the little pecan orchards in the vid. Grandparents bought the place in early 70s. I lease out the farmland to pay the bills. Self sustaining that way.
Couple miles down dirt roads from the 2 lane highway.
I miss the convenience of the city but I like being able to do what I please with out a neighbor complaining.

Look what I found today. My uncle's pipe he had on a flat head Tecumseh. It was a beast. It got put on a hay bale lift but was soon removed due to the fact it threw the bales off the top. Maybe threw is a little under stated. It launched them. I don't know what happened to that engine.
So it looks like a dingo pipe to me!

I'm probably only gonna use about half of it, but it does have a few bends I might be able to relocate to fit better. Plans are still rattling up stairs.

Scavenged a thick piece of steel for a flange. Traced the gasket, drilled bolt holes and a pilot hole for the big bits.
The larger hole was there already but it's a gonner now.

Still need to tidy it up and all but that's what I got done today.

Here's the finished product.

Don't laugh at my horrible welds. This crackerbox is like learning all over again. The bottom looks nice but the top I was having problems... It will do pig, it will do.

Frame fix and more practice with this old box.
Had my shop buddy helping too.

That's a few welds from previous fixes also. I didn't just glob a ton of rod in there.

I might have to start some gussets next time around.

Nah, still a little life left in it. It'll be fine--besides, it'll be fun when it finally lets go.

Hmm. A go kart with a spare tire mounted on it...

Anyway, nice video (pretty stable) and sounds. Not too much wind noise but squeaks, rattles, faint engine and TAV noises. Felt like I was there.

Time for a new tire or 2.

I wanted new tires when I first got the kart. But I'm trying to keep spending down. But you know how toys can suck your wallet dry.

Ever have a front blow out? That might be fun!

Thank youtoob for the video stabilizing. It was like Blair witch all over again at first. The video posted above was before the exhaust upgrade. You can barely hear the engine. Now, you can hear the Braappp!

I wand to take the camera and set up stationary points, perhaps in the corners or along the straight a ways and edit them together to look like a multi angle pro shot. Maybe someday,....

I might do a spare for giggles. Steal my buddy's idea.

Ok. I was gonna decry the lack of engine music in the first video but I figured it couldn't be picked up with the device's microphone. :p

Aren't we strange creatures? We call 'noise' from an engine desirable to hear. We stretch an animal skin tight across an empty log, beat on it and call it music and all the other instruments we have refined over the centuries...

I don't know, if you're a ways away from the house when a tire goes flat, a spare tire sounds good.

So Santa brought me a tach! Asked for 2 but I guess money is tight at the pole this year.

I put it on #2 for a test run. The predator 301 idles at 1100rpm. Book said 1050. That's in the 50+/- that the tach specs.

Reved it up on the stand and hit 3600 when the govna took over. Just like to books!

Moved it over to #1 where is gonna live. Made a mounting plate on the electrical box out of aluminum plate I had laying around.

So for the specs. The B&S with the hot rod mods was idling at 1100. I raised it up a little to 1500. Don't need it dropping that low. It takes a few seconds to gain those rpms after lifting.

Found the 40 starts to engage at 1800 to 1900.
Gonna start making some lighter fly weights soon.

On the stand, starting to rapp it up. Hit 6k easily and I let off. There was still a little more throttle left.
That's awesome!

Aired up the front's and clicked the belt and away I went.

On the long streaches just before I had to hit the brakes to corner I looked down and saw 4500 quite a few times.
Never saw 5k. Still have to hit the road for a high speed.

I love info. Thinking about a marine cam for this thing. Most torque under 4k if I remember right.

Kart on and happy new years to ya all!!

Been a while but still burning gas.

Got around to putting the 8t sprocket on #2.
I knew the top end was gonna drop but I was more curious at the bottom end. Yeah it had more ummph but the 301 had the low end already. So not much gain and the top end suffers.
I could hold WOT no matter what corner I put it in. It never got fast enough to let off in the corners.
I garaged it and put the 9t back on.

Pulled #1 out and went for a few laps. What a difference! The incremental mods creaped up on me. Sure clears the mind when your brrapping around.

Sprocket pic for your entertainment.

I've also been slowly working on track prep.

I ran around the property and started a path that the kart would handle. Some turns were too tight and not used but a couple nice loops started to emerge. Well, the rocks started to work their way up and loose, they would jump in the TC and chain. I kicked rocks and raked alot of them out but ruts and bumps started to emerge.

I started dragging a piece of chain link but soon realized that it wasn't doing much. I tossed a crossties on top but it didn't help to much.

Found a really old box spring mattress made out of angle iron. It was better, but not doing as much work as I wanted. Man I wish I had a tractor.

There is an old harrow that has a bent frame and doesn't drag right. So I dismantled it. Chained it to follow each other instead of side by side. Threw some crossties on top for weight.

I have the option of tines up or down. Makes it nice for leveling or digging the hard packed dirt.

I started with just basically a single lane. But as there was no passing lane for double kart and as #1 got faster I needed wider lanes.

I've got it now to between 8 and 15 feet. Some corners are narrow. I'll drag it then walk around and clean up a little. Gets better and better.

I have lots of rocks.....
