That would be the discovery that led to the invention, there's quite a few of them...

For example, the microwave oven was invented by a scientist working for the American government during WWII; while working on a death ray, he noticed the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted...

Technically gunpowder was more or less a discovery rather than an invention or at least serendipity...by chance, as was nitroglycerin.

Strange. I heard it was tv engineer or tech putting sandwich next to tv and noticed it was warm. And that's how microwave was discovered. I'm sure there are tons of stories that are or are not true.

Like Columbus did not find us and in fact never landed on us ground.

Also Columbus wasn't traveling to prove earth was round. They allready new it was round. Only trying To find another route to...hmm...I forget. Anyways not to prove roundness.

If my 6th grade world history serves me right, he was trying to go to India. In fact, I believe that he thought, till the day he died, that he had actually landed in India and had not discovered a new continent. But yes, he never touched North America and also killed a bunch of those islanders in the Caribbean.
