That's the spirit... But a1/2" pipe + 3/8" rebar + wad of old t-shirt = scaled down portable unit.

Spring, probably not but, it almost certainly would use a ball which, again, is due to the wheel...

I mean was the Wheel actually invented? Or did they "discover" that round rocks roll down a hill better than Squareish triangularish ones.
