Fatal mini bike wreck after police chase

Saw this video just barely. Doesn't show anything graphic as the dash cam picks up the accident after the cop stops and lets the bike speed ahead. Thought I'd share this just to illustrate that:

1) don't run from the cops
2) kids can do some incredibly stupid things, so direct supervision on anything motorized is a must!!!

This is one of those incredibly sad things that could convince somebody to at least obey traffic rules, and to always be right there with your kids when riding.

Hold on a minute. That cop was ripping through residential streets and cutting across people's lawns to catch a kid riding a minibike (a fact that subsequently costed this young man his life)? I know it's illegal to ride on the street, I also know that most of us do at least a little of it, but that was a $99 solution to a $0.99 problem.

That was my thought too. The cop did give up the chase. But only after some Stupid behavior on his part. At one point it looked like he was gonna force the kid into a parked car!

Okay, I feel for this kids parents.

But you need to picture this for a second:
What if he didn't hit that Pontiac, but instead your child riding a bike?

You're still on this boy's side?

That was a stupid move made by the boy.. especially the 'escaping' part!
if he'd stopped, the cops would've dragged him to his mom (alive and well!)
and he'd be grounded for a week or two.. MAYBE loosing his mini bike...
this way.. well... not much better, is it?

remember what I said some months ago about pubertarians brains being "unable to judge risks"?
that's what got him into that, not the cops.
And that mental state would have him crash either way eventually...
If he'd hit your kid or your car for that matter;
I know many around here would've taken a baseball bat to knock some sense into his brain.
(same kid same thing.. just a different perspective)

So yeah, it's a sad story.. but don't blame it on the cops please.
They made up their minds (about 10 seconds into the chase) and gave him the slack he could've used to NOT cause a crash;
he opted against slowing down (his second -very own- bad decision)

I would be angry if the Cop ran over a kid in the street, or that front lawn, or sidewalk he drove over, while chasing the mini bike. This was a residential neighborhood.

I see your side as well, As I stated I usually side with the Police.

I think they were both dumb.

But the cop does not have the excuse of "Pubertarian" and YES he did stop the chase.

Sorry I just watched it again. At 14-17 sec. in The cop drove across the sidewalk and appeared to be trying to hit the Minibiker! Finally at 32 secs, you can hear his partner say "Hey its a residential"

In this Video they are BOTH complete bumbazzes. I do expect more from the Police.
He was not chasing a bank robber in a stolen SUV on the Freeway.

frankly I don't understand ANY of the conversation recorded.. so I can't tell.

He was trying to get INFRONT of the mini biker to stop him crossing his path..
quite a normal cop-stops-vehicle procedure, no?

And again, while this was in fact overly dramatic for nothing but stopping a mini bike;
he didn't and I cannot believe (or see) he even tried to HIT the kid.
Instead.. it appears to me
that he was trying to cut his path and when it became obvious that kid wasn't going to slow down he pulled back to NOT hit the kid.

Perception might be different here, I'm not saying I'm correct on my interpretation by no means.
But from what I see there... the cop was a hair too ambitious for a few seconds at worst..
but neither of us has been in that car, we knew before we saw the footage it's been a kid on a mini bike..
People need a few seconds to adapt and judge a situation at times, and that includes then men in blue.

Quick test: load up that video in full screen (no title no info beforehand) and show it to your wife, and just after the cop car comes to a halt... stop the video and ask her what had happened and who she thinks is responsible.

I would bet she cannot tell it's been a kid, she cannot tell why the kid crashed (other than he's been speeding) and she'll not blame the cops for that either.

IMO the kid kept going because the cop had already demonstrated he would do almost anything to "get" him. Most kids get scared the first time they have a run in with the law. The kid kept going because he was scared to death and was afraid the cop was still going to come after him. Imagine riding your minibike and having a full size charger roaring toward you deliberately and repeatedly. I probably would have too as I've ran from (and got away from most of the time) cops myself (when I was younger) You don't just stop when you're out of arms reach. The "crime" that started this whole fiasco was a kid riding a minibike in a residential neighborhood. In my opinion it wasn't worth a high speed pursuit in the first place.

This is horrible!

However, first someone should him to ride a bike! Stop at stop signs?
and 2, the fact that you need to run from the cops on a minibike/gokart is ridiculous!

I understand dont menace, I get dont destroy property, but just riding in the neighborhood not doing anything wrong???

If he didnt see a cop would his life been saved?

To me it looked like the cop was getting way too close to a kid on a minibike.

First on the front lawn of the corner house.
The cop was trying to WHIP A U-TURN THOUGH A FRONT LAWN TO GET IN FRONT OF A KID ON A MINIBIKE.

Not safe or justifiable. Traction on grass is probably the perfect location for a close encounter manuever between a cop car and minibike. Especially if the homeowner decided to water that day.

Then when he tried to speed up so the kid going 30mph on a minibike with no helmet would have to steer into a parked car. Yep minibike brakes are probably awesome.

At that point I'd be scared that the cop was trying to hit me. He almost did so twice already.

What to do? Take my chances going forward or slow down and wait to get hit by the cop car.



I'm from Chicago where the Police shoot first and make up a story second.
Some how the cameras they wear always malfunction?????????

Well said Bob. Pretty much exactly how I feel about the whole mess. Dumb choices on both sides turned this from a kid riding a minibike in the street to a scene from GTA.

Both parties were wreckless. I'll bet the cop received the call as a reckless driver and nothing else. So he probably got there thinking it was some stupid teen or adult being an idiot through residential.

That kid should have been wearing a helmet, regardless if it was a mini bike, bicycle, roller blades, skateboard, etc. My parents would have reamed me and ripped me a new one plus grounded me if I didn't wear a helmet. No idea if he hit his head or not.

As soon as the cop saw it was a kid on a mini bike, he should have called it off and not spun a U-turn through someone's lawn like that, or even gotten that close to the kid going down the road. If he would have hit the bike, the kid would have probably been run over by the cop car.

It sucks the kid died, but his parents should have told him to wear a helmet. Don't care if it looks stupid, Everytime I ride my bike (bicycle) I wear one, but because I know it can save my dang life. Been wearing one for almost 20 years. So I'll say it's 33% kid's fault, 33% cops fault and the 34% parents fault.

This reminds me of when I was growing up. My buddy had a cottage in WI. One of his friends was involved in police chase. The kids were on snowmobiles. I don't remember the specifics, but one of the kids died when he hit a tree.

Everybody needs to be more careful and responsible.
Kids, Police, Parents, DetroitHoodTV, Me (who shares crazy stuff and recommends 80cc skateboards to my friends), .......

It's just a sad story.

I don'T know what they taught this kid.. but I know what my parents told me when I was that age... and how much I've listened (not at all! and if you're honest you were the same)
yes.. grounded, no tv.. lalala...but most of the times they never knew

I got lucky perhaps, perhaps I wasn't as dumb as this kid, perhaps it's just a different time and a different place I can't tell...

But I can tell that IF such thing had happened it'd not have been my parents fault at all.

And frankly I was riding my cousins moped at the age of 13-14 in italy as well.. on a parking lot alright... but it comes close at least

I mean honestly.. have you really forgotten what it was back then, or are you making this up in case your kids read your posts?

Anyways.. why I came back to this sad story..

I showed this video my wife tonight (preloaded, fullscreen right until the kid crashed and stopped it)
She could NOT identify the mini biker as a kid, I told her the kid crashed fatally and she only said "what? why.. the cops let him escape already?"
I asked her to watch it again telling her that the cops made him crash because they forced him into dangerous situations and he got scared and wanted to get away..

and she said "You're kidding? I see nothing the cops did to make the kid crash he should've just stopped."

I really tried... but she's on my side... (well.. my wife.. love her for a reason )

Anyways, I'd be interested in what your relatives perveive watching the dashcam footage and the dashcam footage only; and what they say about what happened and why.

Anyone dare to try as well?

I looked into the story a little bit on line. Not much, but these details.
This was in Detroit.
The young man (14) Died in front of his own house.
He and his brother were both riding their mini bikes on their street where they live.
Cops had recently stepped up patrols in the area due to recent shootings.
Cops saw the mini bike riding "erratically"

Detroit has a huge mini bike scene. Check u tube.
Who of us has not ridden their Kart or minibike in the street in front of their house.
Mini bike riding always looks erratic.
Cops that are not usually in that neighborhood were out in force looking for "trouble".

Sad situation all around, A bunch of weird circumstances.

First of all, no helmet (I've occasionally ridden a small dirt bike on a driveway with no helmet. Most of us have ridden SOME vehicle besides a car without a helmet). But in this case? Having one was a must.

Likely his chest was crushed by the car.

I do think he got either scared or full of pride "I'm gonna be that GUY from GTA VVIIII!"
Police officer was a tad unreasonable too.

I love riding bikes and Kart's on quiet streets. But that's streets with 1 car per half hour, not one every 10 seconds. And no people and houses either.

The police have radios so that they can keep up with criminals WITHOUT aggressively chasing in their own patrol cars and adding danger to the public.

Unfortunately, tasering the elderly/ill, shooting minorities, shooting pets (in cars and backyards), shooting homeowners when responding to 911 calls, escalating traffic stops, etc. have become all too common since the war on drugs started militarizing local police agencies.

Everyone is considered guilty and dangerous now...rather than innocent until proven otherwise.

I was in the military, served alongside LEOs during the L.A. Riots and have MANY friends that are or have been cops, but it is way out of control now.

The most dangerous thing any American citizen can face now is a cop that "feels unsafe or threatened".
