How do you activate the pump? just manually push button from the cab? or...

Oh nevermind "a momentary switch in the cab"
Looks like you need something in between these 2 trials. Maybe the pvc with less holes?

Hey Supe does your 2011 GMC have the digital tranny temp? my 2013 shows it on the odometer you have to scroll through. That way you know wether its working or not?

Yeah I keep it on the tranny temp when I'm cruising and watch it closely. I've not seen an obvious correlation between temp and hitting the pump as of yet. The dipstick has a lot of info on it including operating temperature range which peaks at 200 degrees so I'm thinking that will be my basis for pulling over. As soon as it hits 200 I'll start scanning for a self place to pull over.

As far as the siphoning, it doesn't begin until I activate the pump for the first time per gallon jug. I will have extra jugs on hand. I'll only run the pump as we start climbing the first of the 3 worst inclines on the I17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff. As the siphoning is happening at speed, the droplets are going in to the radiator so they're helping cool it down. I'll likely pull over at the top of the hill and replace the jug.

Finally towed the toy hauler with the extra tranny cooler and my water sprayer. Seems like the running temp in 100+ degree Phoenix weather is 190 degrees. Hardly leaves margin for climbing hills up out of the valley to Payson on the Beeline or Flagstaff on the 17. On the way up the Beeline I pulled over several times to let the tranny cool when it hit 205 degrees. What a PITA- the sprayer seemed to do nothing at all towards lowering the tranny temp. Even though my dipstick shows 200 degrees as max temp, several charts online show the real damage starts to happen above 220. So on the way home, I decided I would pull over if we approached 220, on one hill it hit 217 as we peaked then quickly dropped below 200 on the backside going downhill.

I would likely get the cooler/fan combo recommended but in January '17, my old man is selling me his 3/4 ton Avalanche with the 8.1L 454 and 4 wheel drive and at some point between now and then I'll sell this truck I love dearly.

Thats kind of a cool engine on that truck..... For chevy that is...;)

I like how it says... the head is a 114cc...... What like almost a suped 99cc pred...... for total displacement.

Since it's on a Suburban chassis, it got the same drivetrain options.

I'll never tow anything one foot with a half ton again personally.

Its a 496, and it makes crap for horsepower no matter where it is, but it makes 450 ft/lbs of torque at 3200 rpm on crap California gas.

Glad the 8.1 was short lived. I've only worked on one 3/4 ton Avalanche that had the 8.1 and, it's nothing special. It was a last ditch effort to keep the big block around and it was a major gas drinker. The 7.4/454 at least could be made for serious power, going off the newer (post 1970s) standard. To be fair, all those engines, before the standard change over, made the same amount of power, technically. In the old standard, auto makers would use race spec parts, open headers, etc to market insane numbers. Not many young ones know this.

Once upon a time, the old saying "there's no replacement for displacement" was somewhat true; however, these days, not so much... especially when you consider my 3.0 litre toyota engine makes 151Kw (202hp) in stock form, which can be almost doubled with a few relatively inexpensive bolt on parts & a remapping of the ECU...

...& then there's turbo diesel power...

Having said that, yes, I realise there's more to it than that; the basic formula for hp is RPM x torque so, an 200hp engine that reaches peak power at 4000rpm makes for a better towing engine than one that peaks at 6000rpm... the cams in my engine don't even start to work until 4000rpm but, I've towed a 1200lb load over 500 miles, crossing a mountain range which peaked @4500' at an average speed of around 70mph twice in the past month & the car didn't miss a beat...

Actually replacement for displacement has been around for over 100 years...turbochargers.

A new EcoBoost is rated to tow roughly the same as my 1998 GMC with a big block, and get's about the same mileage doing so.

A new EcoBoost starts around 38,000 Similarly equipped, my GMC was 1400 lol.

I'll take displacement.

Can you expect any engine to get decent mpg while towing? My 5.4 would get 11-14mpg towing in my 1999 F150. My dad's 1990 GMC K1500 would get 8mpg with a throttle body injected 350 towing. Though the new EcoBoost is making I think 450hp in the Raptor while the updated one for the F150 is still 365hp and 440lb/ft at 2500rpm. Mind you the 3.5 was the replacement for the 5.4L 3 valve. I'm not a fan of any type of charging as it adds complexity and takes up space, making it harder to work on. Give me a 5.0 Coyote any day of the week.
