Well one is double sided

Does it drive anoughter gear?
Are they both the same thickness
Dive clues but I can't help otherwise
But I rekomend u get a bigger key though
That ones too small

On a differant note
I know it's working now
But this may be why it was less effective than a standard catcher
These are the old blades off my mower
That was designed for a catcher
Believe it or not they're not bend
That's the way they're made to create air flow to push the grass up

Nope, no other gears in there.
Other than the cutouts, (I wouldn't even call them teeth) they're both the same

Looks like your key has shrunk?

I don't think it's even a key, it looks like it just a chunk of metal some dufus cut to "size" & stuck in there...

Thanks for that, I can see how that would work...

I'm pretty sure I figured that problem out as being the bag not breathing enough; without the bag, it fired every blade straight out of the chute...

Well, I think it WAS a key once (sheared off woodruff)
Anyways..

With the two not exactly similar gears you have; I think the one with the 'cutouts' is the reverse gear..

and here's why:

the grease inside the gearbox gets slung around by the teeth of your gears
The slingers on the backside help get the grease into the hole for the shifting fork shaft.
(that's on the recverse-gear-side, isn't it?)

Hmm, I dunno, have a look at the pic & tell me what you think...

That is correct; nice logic

So, after 3 days of phone calls & running around, I finally managed to source a woodruff key (you wouldn't think it would be that difficult...), put everything back together & gave it a test drive.

I was running well but, still not moving that well but, it was getting late so, I called it a day...

The plan for today was to attempt to discover exactly what was slipping; my guess was one of the belts was sliding on one of the newly cleaned pulleys...

I set the rear up on a stand & attempted to lock the chain. The engine started easy enough but, was revving way too high; I killed the engine & examined the throttle assembly, to find the linkage to the governor had an unusually high amount of load on it, as if it was adjusted all the way up... which was strange because I reset the governor yesterday & it was running fine...

Not being too concerned about it (which, in hindsight, was my undoing), I pressed on but, blocked the carb linkage so the engine wouldn't rev too high.

It started but, didn't run for long. I tried again, with the same result only now, the started was extremely hard to pull...

I thought it best to examine the governor linkages & found that, after loosening the arm, I could not move the rod so, I decided I needed to crack open the case, only to find a shattered governor!

Having the original engine, I thought the governor mech from it may fit but, alas, the mounting bracket was 1/8" too long :censored:

After six months of messing with this machine, spending more time fixing it than using it, I've now decided to call it quits; I'm done, I'm over it; it's up for sale; anyone wanna but a used riding mower? Everything works except the engine... :lolgoku:

You know, I was thinking that last night; we remove governors from these engines all the time so, I don't see why it'd be an issue; I'm just not sure if I can be bothered messing with the carb to get it tuned in or not

It shouldn't take too long to tune it. You have spent so much time and effort on this mower that you might as well go a little further

If you do run it without the governor you may want to set up a foot or hand operated throttle so you can keep the rpms in check when its not under a heavy load.

Well, I decided to put the whole thing back together & I'll create a linkage to open the throttle & I'll come up with a throttle stop to govern it...

It's still going though, I pick up it's replacement today...

As a result of someone asking if the engine still ran, I dropped some oil in it, manifactured a throttle linkage that restricts the butterfly movement & attempted to start it. It was PERFECT! Just the right amount of RPM at full throttle, as if the governor was still there...

I had a prospective buyer show up to look at the mower today. I started it up, it ran for about 30 seconds before it died. When I tried to restart it, I couldn't pull the rope; after removing the starter shroud, I tried to turn the flywheel which would only go about half a rev... (there goes that sale)

After the buyer left, I pulled the engine down to find this:

Need I say, NOT HAPPY!

the f....

How on earth did that happen??

The only thing I can think of is high temp + high RPM = hot alloy melting together... which is probably why the governor exploded in the first place...

Sorry for all the troubles you are having

Seriously, I just want this thing gone; all it had to do was run for another few minutes & it would've been...

After this, the buyer offered me $50, which is less than what I paid for it before I spent $200 on it; I just couldn't do it...
