Should be no issues(I usually run a 5:1 on my karts) if your wheels are 10"-11", and if the over all weight(w/ you on it) isnt too much for the motor to push.

I would personally run a 6:1-6.5:1, for a barstool, for starters... the center of gravity(CoG) is so high youll more than likely tip over your first turn(unless you make it about 40" wide and equivalently proportioned correctly... but then, thats a go kart w/ a stool for a seat).

So you would gear higher ( numerically), to limit top speed? Or so it would have more low end? As far as tipping over one has to be smarter that the stool they're riding. I don't plan on racing around corners at high rates of speed I just wanted to build one for a long time. If I can pull a few wheelies and scare myself a couple times (even if that means tipping over) then the project will be a success.

I didn't build it like your typical bar stool I will post pictures soon. I used mostly what I had on hand. It is longer than out I have seen. Seat height should be about 26". I'm 6'4" 235 so the little bar stools you usually see won't cut it.

Oh trust me I have my share of scars. I'm not a youngster (46) and have done some dumb things. I am lucky to even be alive. With that I have learned a lot. I don't plan on testing my luck too much, but if it doesn't scare you s little what fun is that. I think this thing will be fun. If not I will sell it or cut it up and make something else.

Cool, your a normal sized guy like me

Have you considered installing an adjustable seat mount?

I've always thought having the ability to adjust the seat forward or back 6" or so would be an awesome future on barstool racers, especially with heavier riders. You could adjust the seat (transfer your weight) forward to improve low-speed steering ability, or adjust the seat back for less-twitchy steering/better high speed stability. I was thinking the sliding mount from a cars bucket seat would work great and only add a few extra lbs...

Not a bad idea on the adjustable sear mount. I already finished chassis and seat. No adjustment. I just finished tho motor/jackshaft plate of course I made that all adjustable. Never even thought about the seat. If this is fun I will build another one.

I've been promising to add pictures. I work 12 hour shifts and work on this thing after work and on my days off. I finally took some time to upload the pictures. I still have a little ways to go. Have to figure out a throttle cable for the Mikuni carb and twist throttle. Haven't installed the carb yet.

Too many pictures to post them all so here is a link: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camaroman7d/slideshow/Bar Stool Cruiser

My bar stool racer has a Tecumseh 5hp ohv engine, a Comet TAV2-30 and 12/40 gearing turning 13" tires. Mine runs about 35mph if I remember right. I actually think it would go faster if I lowered the gearing to a 12/60 because the TAV doesn't fully shift out. Mine handles this speed fairly well and turns great. I used about 7.5 degrees of caster and when I turn my front wheels full lock, it will lift the inside rear tire about 1/2" off the ground. Good luck on your build.

Mine has right at 10* of caster and it lifts the rear inside tire as well, this should help with turning and the live axle. Hope to take a test ride by next weekend.
