Hello for starters and i just recently purchased a kart and it had a comet tc on it and it set in a field for awhile so i bought one of them tav2 s instead of trying to fix the seased comet. I can not in any way no how get that thing to quit chewing my belt tried the spacer that was with the kit and that didnt work so made my own one to small and the other to big and one that i thought was just right but still no and now i have to buy another belt:(. ive did about everything i know to do ive put straight edge on and tried to get it but nothing works and im fed up lol...
I have a predator 212 milled head, gov, removed ported and polished and if theres any thing else you need to know let me know the only thing i cant do is pics.
thanks, Allen

Welcome...
We need pictures, so first thing I want to know: "Why can't you?"

But for starters let's try without:
what's your karts approximate weight, the exact tire size, and gear ratio
(toothcount of sprocket on the driven of TC and toothcount of your axle sprocket)

chewing belts may be caused by a lousy gearing;
maybe your belt isn't aligned properly.
A TAV2 kit comes with an asymmetric belt, you sure you have the FLAT side mounted towards the engine?

Is the belt perfectly straight between the driver and driven?
(the belt should be in a 90° angle to the PTO shaft AND the jackshaft; and be centered between all sheaves)

Is your axle moving freely?
Does the engine turn the wheels if you lift the rear off the ground?

PS And please.. try to post pictures, that's far easier than fishing in the dark

well yes the axles free its a 10 tooth on tc and a 60 on axle. the tires are 18-9.50x9 nobbies and yes the flat side is right out and everything is 90 deg. it moves freely i have rode it a little bit and it has a lot of power on take off but not a hole lot of speed. one thing to is it only does it on take of and i can feel it like pulsing like its engaged but then it disengages or something i mean i researched and looked at pics and stuff like that and i cant see that mine looks any different idk what is wrong with darn thing

Those two sentences kind of contradict each other; 6:1 gearing on 18" tyres should give you horrible acceleration & a top speed of 32mph@3600rpm :huh: Something's not right...

Don't forget the TC.
Maybe it cannot shift up because of the huge tires,
and is stuck in 2.7:1 therefore has a constant 16:1 gear ratio...
instead of shifting up it chews on the belt.

happy,
you might want to try to reset the driven unit to shift faster;
on your driven you'll have three holes and a spring sitting in the second;
reassemble the driven with the spring in the first (leftmost) hole.

Maybe that helps a little, if not I'm afraid you'll have to find another rear sprocket (to gear lower.. say 7:1) or smaller wheels.

ok guys thanks it all makes sense now because my room mate and i both have a kart and he runs a centrifugal clutch with a 13 and 75 axle and 14 in tires and he cant barrely keep up on take off but he can just fly past me on top end oh and i got the governers removed on them. and i will try to move that spring on the driven as well the next time i get a chance to work on it, thats when i can get some pics of it. Another thing i tried to was when it was eating the belt on the engine side so i reajusted the driver and flipped the belt over good side towards the engine and it still was eating the engine side of the belt??? just dont get it because it was as straight as an arrow on the stand running it watching the clutch engage

If it's asymmetrical, the belt can only go on one way. Reversing it will just ruin it.

If the pulleys are flat on the side closest the engine, and angled on the outer side, then it's asymmetrical. If both sides of the pulley are angled, ignore me.

no oxy u are right it is asymmetrical maybe thats a reason, i didnt even look to see if one side of the belt was flat or not, but saddly i already turned it around an ran the other way

Your belt should have been marked if it's asymmetrical. I've attached a pic of the belt on my TC. If it's backward, not only will it quickly destroy the belt, but it also won't engage properly because the surfaces never mate up correctly.

Put a new belt on, the right way this time, and let us know how it goes afterward.

I would make 100% sure that you have the correct belt for your TC. I would also make 100% sure that it is on the right way, otherwise your TC is useless. I would also give the TC some routing maintenance

i have another question when i bought the tav2 from bmi it came with a shim in the box.. should that be the right alignment they want it to have or should you have to make your own shim for the driver cause i may have just been chasing my tail this whole time just cause of a improper belt installation instead of improper alignment i just assumed (because there was not directions) that all you had to do was align the plate up and put the spacer on and put the driver on. and as i said i didnt see anything like oxymoron's pic he showed on my belt but it does definately look just like his.One other thing i already built a minibike can i go ahead and post the build i did on here and if so how would i go about that as this is my first time to use a forum.

It's up to you to make sure the alignment is correct. They sometimes include a spacer washer for certain engines, but you're the one to decide if you need it or not when you're installing. I had to use one behind the driver on my engine to provide the necessary clearance (I have a predator 212cc).

If your belt isn't marked, put the flat side to the flat side of the pulleys, and the angled side to the angled side of the pulleys. It's pretty self explanatory.

You can post your mini bike build thread in the mini bikes and choppers section. It doesn't matter if you're already done, but we'd like to see the process, and explanations of what you've done. We love this stuff :)

I'm kind of a newb myself, but I'm totally addicted :D

Look forward to seeing your build.

P.S. Also, if you have the same TC as me, GTC has PDF instructions on their website.
