You don't have to be a kid to have heroes. You should always have someone you admire to follow until the day you die, and strive to be more like them.
I'll start with my nephew, he is currently active duty in Afghanistan. Basically, he is putting his life on the line for his fellow man 24-7.
Then we move to the Police. Although I have a best friend that is a detective aand they put their lives on the line many hours a day, they can also be power hungry pri(#$, who use every day folks misfortune for personal gain.
Of course doctors-and lawyers-(don't even start) I've had to depend on both to save my life.
Then there are the part-time heroes-people like Firemanjim, who sit around the firehouse watching cable TV and eating unhealthy snacks-Seriously Jim, I'm only giving you a hard time because I know you are a fellow Texan, can take it, and know how we are. I couldn't even think of doing what you do.
Then we come to my next heroes-people who sacrifice some of their lives to help others. This is where the unsung heroes live.
Some of which live here. There are a lot of folks on this site that devote a lot of time just to help others.
Some do much more offsite, but don't let on. I know some things about a certain member that maybe some don't, (even though I am pretty new to the site).
Anyway, I am wishing one of my unsung heroes the best and ask you keep him in your prayers.

When I read the topic, I was all..
Ohhhh "Captain Future" (The man and reason I still have sideburns ;))

Reading the post I only want to agree (up to a certain point; nevermind)
The BEST people in the world are those who are willing to to help!

And as I just stated in the Wankel-thread a few hours ago, I am very happy to be among some of those people here on this website.

Again, thank you!

It would help if we knew who that was; I have a pretty good idea but, confirmation would be good :)

I've never really had anyone I look up to as most people tend to underestimate my abilities so, I tend to not show any interest in them...

On the other hand, one of my heroes, as far as how tough they are, & I don't mean tough as in "I can beat you up without breaking a sweat", I mean tough as in nothing holds them back.

My niece was born with a hole in her heart. As a result, she had undergone open heart surgery 3 times before her first birthday. After one surgery, the blood filter let through a clot which caused a stroke, leaving her with Cerebral Palsy.

Because her legs were turned in due to the CP, at age 15, she underwent surgery to have her legs straightened, again a year later to finish the job & again last year to have her pacemaker replaced.

As expected, she devloped slowly, mentally & physically but, last year she turned 18, finished high school & is now learning to cook.

Through all that, I have never seen the girl without a smile on her face, although, I don't see her that often but, I've seen her a few hours after major surgery...

Fabroman-
I know what you mean about being underestimated and mental toughness. I have an aunt that developed Scoliosis at a young age. She was crazy in a good way and was always upbeat, despite the fact that she had to be in a lof of pain much of the time and people always stared at her wherever she went.
As far as confirmation, you know who I'm talking about. You have known him much longer than me, so I'll leave it up to you whether we reveal any more.
He lives a little bit north of us.

Well, I appreciate the kind words- I really do. I'm no hero by any stretch, but I do try to help. Personal attention? Well- I kind of brought this upon myself, didn't I? I blew the lid off it the other day in another thread, while trying to wrap my head around it. Sometimes it just helps to talk. I might just as well explain it here, because I know there's another caring member or two that I said I'd explain it to and haven't gotten around to it yet. I was feeling decent enough yesterday, and was more interested in working on my kart than typing. That's the way it should be, right?

Last weekend, I found myself in some incredible, gut wrenching pain. So painful that I couldn't speak, or barely move. I recognised this pain as a kidney stone, as I have had 2 prior stones in the past 5 years.

So, off to the hospital I went. Figured I'd get some morphine, couple tests, be told I had a stone, and move on. Wrong.

I spent 4 hours in the hospital that night, and was discharged at midnight. There was nobody available to operate the CT scan machine, so I had instuctions to come back the next morning for a scan. No problem. My parents literally live a block away from this hospital. So I crashed out at my parent's place and was awakened at 5am by that pain again. Dangit! Well- had to go to the hospital later anyway, so off I went. More drugs, more tests, more waiting. The hospital had goofed on the requisition form, and the CT scan was not expecting me, so I had to wait for hours.

Finally, I got the scan, and awaited the result. In time, a doctor came along. Told me that no stone was visible in the scan, and he wanted another one done, this time with a contrast agent (a dye, if you will) to make the results mush sharper. Hours later, scan #2 complete with dye. In all this time, I also had a couple x-rays done, and all the drugs I wanted. Yay!

Somewhere in all of this, they figured out I had pneumonia. Not a huge surprise. With all the demolition work I have been doing lately (as a result of the July 8 Toronto floods) I have been breathing a lot of undesirable crap), and had a tightness in my chest. No Big deal. I have recurring asthma, I'm used to it.

Eventually, a doctor showed up. Told me I had a "mass" on my right kidney. What? Get this- They found all the paperwork from my kidney stone 3 years ago, and found the "mass" then, too- but smaller. Yet nobody had mentioned this to me? I still don't get it. Mass? Now I'm a little scared. I was told I'd have a date with a specialist in the next day or two, given some pharmaceuticals, and away I went.

Next day, the specialist's office called, and told me to come in as soon as I was able. Wierd- usually, appointments are set and you come when they dang well tell you to! So later that afternoon I went. Here's the upshot-

The mass may or may not be cancerous. It probably is, there's a chance it's not. It has grown, and will continue to. Due to it's size, it must come out. It has already stared to mis-shape the kidney and sooner or later it will cause trauma to my other organs even if it is benign (a Harmless growth, not cancerous).

Unfortunately, it cannot just be cut out. It's location is pretty much right smack in the middle of my kidney, where all the wiring and plumbing is. Odds are good that my kidney just wouldn't be recoverable, so out comes the whole dang thing.

I've become rather attached to my right kidney over the last 40 years, I think I'm going to miss it.

Here's some interesting and fun facts of the matter.

*The pain (according to several people) isn't even my kidney- it's my lung, caused by the pneumonia. From what I have seen and felt over the last week, I believe it. You all ever had a stitch or a cramp? You can breathe in halfway okay, but if you try to breathe deeply it hurts? Yeah, like that. The big pain was wild though- stretched from my right shoulder all the way down my back.

*The "mass" may or may not be cancerous, it probably is, and I will probably never know. They aren't going to waste time with a biopsy, it's gotta go.

*Whatever it is seems well-contained. They found no evidence that it has spread anywhere else.

*My outlook and odds are very good- the expert says that there's a 90%+ chance that I will never have any further, related problems after the surgery, and all my other organs are good.

*A human can survive with 1/3 of one good kidney. I will come out of this with an entire good one.

*The freaky bit- The incredible pain I felt, I thought was a kidney stone. I told the hospital staff that, so they paid attention to my kidneys. Because the x-rays and CT scans overlapped my lungs, they discovered the pneumonia. The pain was actually caused by the pneumonia. If I didn't have the pneumonia (therefore the pain) I wouldn't have gone to the hospital etc. How much further would this thing in my kidney have gotten???

I really feel for my wife. 4 years ago, her dad passed rather suddenly of liver cancer. Only a bit over a week ago, her mother passed. Cancer. Now- she's told her husband may have it! Poor girl. I keep telling her she is NOT getting rid of me that easily!

This past week has been a whirlwind, but I can say this: My outlook is good, my attitude positive. I WILL get through this intact, I WILL survive and move forward. I AM a stubborn sonofagun, and it'll take much more than this to put me down.

Thanks for your concerns fellas! I appreciate the kind words and props. There will be periods where I'm not on as much or not posting much, but I'm not going far!

Good to see you haven't lost your sense of humour

I WILL get through this intact

Well, not entirely, you will be short a kidney :lolgoku:

There will be periods where I'm not on as much or not posting much, but I'm not going far!

...& there will probably be times when we can't get rid of you 'coz you'll have nothing better to do while healing :roflol:

The bottom line is, although this is the best most of us here can do, & I think I can speak for everyone here, we'll be here for ya buddy

Best wishes for a quick, uncomplicated recovery

Oh SURE! Throw THAT in my face, why don't ya?!?!:censored:

LOL. Thanks a lot for the well-wished everybody. I have a positive attitude going in, and I will be fine. And quite honestly, many people, greater than I (many people are greater) have faced much greater tribulation, and come out kicking. Whenever I feel down about a given situation, my mind turns to Professor Stephen Hawking. Here is (arguably) the greatest mind on the planet, trapped in an entirely USELESS body. You think YOU got it rough? This guy is a complete genius, who cannot even enjoy the simple dignity of going off and having a leak in private, or wiping up after a dump.

Kinda puts a new perspective on things, don't it?

I think I know what you may have been thinking. The order could be different, and not everyone likes police. The order was mainly time based.
As far as actual life threatening service goes, although time wise, police are more vulnerable more hours, when actually engaged, firemen are much more likely to be harmed or killed.
Also, you'll run into problems anytime you stereotype any group of people. There are some cops whose main motivation is control and a need to feel powerful over others.Besides, I can't remember the last time I heard of someone getting a ticket from a fireman.
Was that it?

No, that's not it ;)
I never met a Cop that I could not categorize as being a good guy in the end.
Even the ones that came to search my house for illegal weapons, pulling me out of bed taking me for questioning;
they were harsh, demanding and relentless of course; but in the end, they turned ot to be true honest and kind.
Well most likely because I did nothing wrong of course.
Long story short: My ex's new boy accused me of threatening his life (liar), that I put a gun to his face (dork) in the end a judge imposed a fine on HIM (harharharrrrr).

And yes without any doubt firemen are true heros.
If there's an adjective for firemen or cops around here it'd be "underpaid".

Same in this country, itsid, and I would add teachers to that list. But then again I think carpenters are HIGHLY UNDERPAID and if anyone wants to rectify that I am open for business.

All teachers in germany are overpaid I'd say ;)
But that's an entirely different story.

I AM UNDERPAID! (does that count for something ;))

Being underpaid doesn't make you a hero,
I assume there are even well and overpaid humans that one could consider being a hero.

Because of the many questions I had I was reading more than just one forum, and of course I read some german forums too.
I ended up registering here, not only because most of my questions were already answered, but because I liked the way how that was done.

I don't know why, but in germany and most of the kart forum users are just testosteroning all over the place (mine is bigger, faster.... more yellow)
I'm older than thirteen I do know how far I can pee ;)

What? right.. back to topic....
I liked this forum the most from what I have seen in a few clicks, and it's getting more evident;
We have heroes amongst us! That counts.
I'm impressed on so many levels, because of many reasons.

There are people around here that I would call heroes.
Some because of their profession.(Jim, salve!)
Some because they are willing to offer more than just an opinion or advice.(Desertduler, salute amico mio)
And then again others because of what they have to deal with and HOW they deal with it.(toystory, Cordialità, su con la vita!)
just to name a few.

PS I can only repeat: thank you guys!
