building up a kart my grandpa gave me. turning it into a little off roader. i plan to run a 420cc predator engine and a comet torque converter. should i use #41 chain, or will i be ok with #35? id rather use #35 if i could because i already have a sprocket for #35.

You could use a #35, but I would advise using #40/#41 because you have a pretty powerful engine. The #35 is not as strong as the others
Just be advised that you WILL need a 40 series TC and not a 30 series. I am not too sure what you have, but a 30 series was not designed for that amount of HP

however, not to contradict you Paul but, the load rating isn't that different; 480lbs (#35) as against 500lbs (#41)
That is good to know. I have always just assumed that the #40/41 chains are MUCH stronger

I have found #35 chains harder to line up than #41 clains. I have also found that they come off easier on bumps.
been looking around online, does noone make a 40 series kit? all i can find are separate parts.
if i went with a hillard extreme duty clutch with 14 teeth, and a 60 tooth axle sprocket, with 16 inch tall off road tires, what kind of acceleration can i expect? this will be off road only, i dont need to go super fast. i would go to a 72 tooth axle sprocket, but im worried about ground clearance. does anyone know the outside diameter of a 72 tooth #41 chain sprocket?
EDIT: looks like 60T is the biggest i can get in #41 chain?

Hi, just to throw my 2 cents in you could run a jack-shaft set up insted of a torque converter.
thinking that would work better at this point, as far as cost.
i have no clue what sprockets to use though. for the clutch i will probably go with the hillard extreme duty 14 tooth. this kart will have 16 inch tall tires. i want good torque, but i dont want it to crawl. 15-20mph would be nice.

I'm surprised you cannot seem to find a complete 40 Series kit. What sites have you been looking at? Also, a jackshaft does not replace a torque converter. And a TC is always better than a centrifugal clutch, especially for an off road type kart.

bmikarts, mfgsupply, gokartsupply, gokartsusa, gokartgalaxy, northern tool are all the places i looked. i know the TC would be the best thing, but it looks like id spend over $300 piecing one together that can handle the 420 predator, versus 90 for the clutch and maybe another 60 for all the jackshaft parts.

check ebay for torque converter they have great prices
looked there too. all i found was the separate pulleys and the belt. im gonna do a jackshaft setup. see my build thread for details
A comet 40 series does not get sold as a kit, you HAVE to buy everything seperate. It is not like the comet 20 and 30 series where they do come in kits.
With a 14T going to a 60T, you are going to have a 4.28:1 gear ratio. That is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY to high for you, ESPECIALLY with 16" tyres and offroading. A good middle road for gearing is always 6:1. For you, you are going to have to gear to at least 8:1 IMO. That means you are going to either have to get a TC or a jackshaft and cent clutch
