Just purchased a b&s flathead raptor with girdle and seems other goodies and was told it was an alcohol motor. Dumb question but can I use 110 or have to use methanol? I can not find methanol in my area so far. Lol sorry if this has been answered somewhere else but thanks ahead of time

Have to use methanol. Where's your local dirt track? The speed shop nearby will have it. Otherwise you have to switch it back over. Its more than just a jet change. The carb internals are all different and the timing is more advanced.

That's 1 of my problems. There isn't any kart tracks around my area that I know of. It's all dirt bikes and quads. We got plenty of Honda and yammy dealers around tho but not sure they can help. There's a guy by my moms that races funny cars so I was hopin he'd help me out.

call around to different shops that work on small engines maybe they know how or know someone who does it worked for me anyway.

i also recently bought a B&S L-head motor, and the dude said that it was setup to run on methanol. is there a way i can check this? because i am not sure. i am trying to start it with 93octane :ack2:

Ok well the truth of it is. you can get away with just a re-jet. thats all thats really changed anyway.

Plus MAYBE the timing.

Are you talking about the engine in this thread?

Logically speaking, you should have the opposite problem: As I understand it, methanol carbs use a bigger jet than standard so, your carb should be flooding the engine but, you're not getting enough fuel...

Am I on the money here guys?

i believe you are. and yes i am talking about the engine in that thread. when i do get it idling by shooting a little bit of gas directly into the carb, i tried to give it a little throttle and it sounded like it choked out or something like that. then wouldnt start after that.

Yeah you can start it with 93, that's what I did. It'll run rough cause like other guy stated carbs are setup diff. Once I put in a lil alcky it ran like a champ. Sadly once I got it runnin my kid ride it a few times and now has decided she wants a new dirt bike so I'm sellin my bug

Let me clear up a few misconceptions y'all seem to have, as far as fuel is concerned.

Alcohol is often used in high performance engines, NOT because it burns hotter or contains more energy, but because it requires less air to achieve the proper stoichiometric ratio. Gasoline engines require 14.7 parts air to 1 part gas. Methanol engines run 6.42:1. So what does this mean? Although gasoline actually contains more energy than methanol, methanol requires less air to burn, and so we can cram a whole lot more methanol in the combustion chamber. This site sums it up pretty well.

Now, about testing your methanol engine with 93 (or any other octane gasoline). DON'T! You're dumping nearly 3 times the amount of fuel into the combustion chamber that's needed. It wastes fuel, leads to increased carbon build up, and can damage piston rings if run that way for too long. Methanol also burns much slower than gasoline, and as a result, methanol engines run more spark advance.

Also, read one of my previous posts about octane ratings:

Not this again...

OCTANE is a rating which describes the temperature at which a substance ignites. There are several rating systems, but here in the states, we use the Anti-Knock Index (AKI). The OCTANE rating has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the energy content of the fuel.

If you don't believe me, let's look at an example:

Regular (87) unleaded has an octane rating of 87 on the AKI scale. One gallon of this fuel contains 114,000 BTU.

Pure ethanol has an octane rating of 99.15 on the AKI scale. Although the octane rating is higher, one gallon of ethanol only contains 76,100 BTU.

Yup. I couldn't tell you where to find it, since I've never run it. You may be able to find a gallon of it somewhere as "wood alcohol", "methyl alcohol", "methyl hydrate", "wood naphtha", or "wood spirits". Might try Lowe's/Home Depot in the paint section. Won't be cheap that way, but you'll at least be able to get the engine fired up.

:wai: Converting an known alky carb back to gas forget it. B&S flatties that are setup to run alky, theres more to it than a jet change in the carb. Carbs setup to run alky have the cat eyes behind the jet opened up and a different size jet. Therefore when trying to run gas you are dumping way to much fuel for the engine to run correctly. If you want to run gas, best to change to a carb. that is kown to have to run gas. Best way I have found to check if it is a alky carb, pull the needle valve and the jet and look down in the hole and look at the cat eyes. Gas carb, one small cat eye and one large cat eye. Alky carb to large cat eyes. Or compare a known gas carb cat eyes dia. agaisnt a carb that you think has been run on alky.

saw one large eye on the left and one small eye on the right.

gas carb?

and that needle valve with the screw. how tight should that screw be? it has a spring.
