DIY Fishin' Rod Case AND SPOON!

In just a few days, I'm doing a fly-in fishing trip with my dad. We're driving waaay up north, throwing our gear into a bush plane, and getting dropped in a lake right smack in the middle of bloody nowhere for a week of fishin' fun.

We needed hard cases to put our rods into, to allow them to survive being stuffed in the tail of a Cessna... Sure- you can buy hard cases that'll hold 2-3 rods... for about $100 locally at Bass Pro. Bugger that. Off to home depot I go.

We bought a 10' length of 4" PVC sewer pipe, two end caps, two thread adapters, two clean-out caps, and some glue. That was enough for two 4' rod cases, and worked out to less than $20 each, not including paint.

I already had some paints kicking around, as well as a camo ratchet strap with a broken ratchet. So here's what I made! It's entirely weathertight, with a gasket on the screw cap. The strap is adjustable, thanks to some buckles I robbed from a tool bag!

EDIT- Don't laugh too hard at my paint job- It was my first camo attempt on anything...

This is a great idea for poles, are your reels being carried seperate or are they small enough to fit in the tube ?

Separately, in a tackle bag. I thought about making the tube flare widely at the end using maybe a 6" to 4" reducer, but decided against it for now.

My brother made something like this, not with the fancy(high price im sure ) paint job.

Okay fine- the usuals (for me). Northern Pike, Walleye, Bass, maybe I'll even hit gold and tie into a Muskie!

Just be careful not to drop your case, you might not ever find it!

Only if you keep the cap on. You wouldn't go amiss with some teflon tape either (though that is overkill).

Anyways, have a good trip (if we don't speak before then) and catch lots of fish.

All the years my uncle has gone up there, bass were pretty rare catch at the lake he gone to...

This year was a good one for Walleye(atleast for us), there were in shallower water it seemed, we prolly caught a couple dozen, the biggest 26, 20(mine ) and 16in... most on silver spoons... What do you plan to use might I ask?


The water I lost it in was filled with ravenous 8-24in pike, they was hittin the lures like mad... it was overcast, if the sun was out I might have could have seen it, it wasnt terribly deep there. Might have to pull a stunt like my dad, lost is rod in a lake and pulled it up a year or so later...

We was catchin lots of smaller pike, the pull hard, really makes you think there something big on... then you pull up this 8in silly littler guy... good times... good times...

Speaking of "silver spoons"... What's a DIY forum without an experiment or two! I was sorting out my tackle and got to the spoons. Then, I had a stupid Ran into the kitchen, ran out again before the wife could catch me! So- let's see if I can catch something on a real spoon!
