I THOUGHT YOU WERE BUILDING A SIDE WINDER!?

i was planning on the sidewinder, i still really want to build it, but its just getting more and more expensive (i was also having a lot of trouble locating an engine...), so that project will probably be put into "storage". :(

maybe once i get a real job i can think about it again.

_______________________________________________
NEW WELDER?

instead i'm hoping to save up for a larger MIG welder! :idea2:
MIG welders are expensive! so are gas bottles! anyway i'm searching for the best deal on something that can MIG weld 1/4" steel and have the option to do some aluminum work in the future.
not sure what to get, the ideal machine is a Hobart Handler 210, but that would be my one b-day present, and i would be nearly broke, or in debt..... i will see how much i can save up in the next month or so, then possible sell my old welder to get a gas bottle.

maybe you guys have some suggestions, or ideas of different tools to get.

NEW PROJECTS?

if i do get a welder i will probably be looking at building a welding cart, bench grinder stand, and maybe a table if can afford it after i buy the welder.

after that i'm thinking another mini bike, either a Honda trail 70 kinda thing to ride on the trails with, or maybe a mini cafe racer style bike.

another option would be to re-do the go kart so it doesn't flip over so easily.... hopefully not to expensive since i would have most parts already.

THE MINI-MINI BIKE:

some of you may be curious about the mini-mini bike.

basically i entered it in the science fair, won, was told i could not ride it, went to he next fair, then got disqualified because it was to dangerous (they couldn't have determined that 2 or 3 months ago huh?) :mad2:.

hopefully i can get the starting method figured out for the mini bike, then get the gas tank cleaned out, and see if it all works!

LINKS AND PICTURES:

Honda mini trail,

welding cart (yeah, i got bored and made a sketch-up :D),

best welder i could possibly get, very (very!!!!!!) expensive though...

what i was building, but it's just too expensive... (sidewinder),

Mini-mini bike, needs a few things before test run,

go kart to either be modified a good bit, or have a new frame built for it (looks awesome, but handling is scary, its also very unstable...),

anyway, tips, suggestions, or opinions are welcome!

south kart,
Thanks!!!! like i said needs some work, but thanks for the comment! i appreciate it! :D

blue,
yea, they have always caught my eye as being, well, fun! unless i find one for cheep like what you found i will probably make one, or something similar at least!

i guess the cart angle is a bit steep, but like i said, i'm just using the sketch as a picture to look at, i'm going to just build around the welder and bottles.

looks like i may be able to scrape together enough cash to get that bigger welder, i' will be pretty much broke, but hey, i could get it! the two things i'm trying to avoid with the welder:

- spending too much and not having much money to make anything with the welder

- cheeping out on the welder just to find out how much better off i would have been getting the bigger one....

p.s. can't wait until school is over! (still like a month and a half, but we never do anything for the last month or so anyway)

we have 19 days left of school. just gotta get it done!!!!

something im doing, is fixing up a baja warrior i got for $275. a pretty nice trail bike since you like the honda's.

it has a clone right now but i may possibly be putting a 8 or 9 HP tecumseh and a torque converter in it later this spring.

my bike is in here next to the quad

its got a clone. im trying to get one of my tecumseh's restored for it. a 1960's 6hp, a 1980's 8hp, a 1990's 9hp.

the 6hp needs to be stripped and repainted, needs governor parts, carb, exhaust, recoil cover.. etc.....

the 8hp needs the crankshaft machined.

the 9hp is blown up and needs a side cover, camshaft, carb bowl, and has no electric start so its just pull start.

the go pro is my friends but he always leaves it at my house!

blue:

I would say go for the 8hp if machining isn't too much. i don't see any reason for you to switch to the 6hp unless the 6.5 blows up and the 8 and 9 are very expensive to fix.
maybe keep the 6.5 and look for a 30 series driver and driven (and belt!)? i think BMI has them (yup), and you already got the jack shaft.

ok, so i think this is what i'm going to do:

- get new welder & sell old one
- make welding cart, bench grinder stand, and table.
- make a new racing style kart frame with parts from my old kart, and proper steering!!!!!
- in the middle of all of those, get more money to buy metal.
- also in the middle of all the above is to get the mini bike going.
_______________________________________________________________
Welder:

even though its really (really!) expensive, i think the best deal is to suck it up and buy the handler 210, its worth it for aluminum considering the $100/hr price at the shop! plus i can MIG weld 1/4"!
______________________________________________________________
Mini-bike:

i will likely make a new aluminum gas tank for the mini. the steel one has a bunch of flux core crap in it that i can't get out... then i will develop some method of starting the engine.
_________________________________________________________
Kart:

the only parts i plan to buy for the kart will be a new rim, hub, and tire. then a bigger axle, other than that i't will be either made from scratch or used from the old kart. i plan to make:
- steel race style kart frame
- aluminum gas tank
- aluminum bumper
- aluminum seat
- spindles and steering shaft.

p.s. Anderkart, i will warn you now that i may be bugging you about angles and such from your racing kart chassis as you seem to be the go-to guy! :D

well i got my harbor freight 90 amp flux

good welder for the stuff i do but sounds like you want to weld bigger and diff. materials.

anyways tomorrow i get a quote (hopefully) by meeting with the guy tomorrow morning.

im not switching it all because of the extra HP, (or less being an h60) but that the 8hp has an electric starter, (w/pull start) its a flathead, and its american........

OH. and wait can i really, just put the driver and driven on my existing jackshaft? really?????

i agree, the 90 amp flux welders are great machines (i have the Lincoln 90 amp flux). its a great machine for making tube frames, but as soon as you hit 1/4" or below 18ga or so its not really interested. the only other two problems are: one aluminum, and two the flux core stuff which makes doing something like a multi pass a pain, and if it gets inside a welded container, its not at all easy to get out.

its not that i really need to upgrade, i could keep the 90 amp and be reasonably happy, but i have often found times were i wished i had a bigger welder. so i started looking.
- HF 140A, i would rather spend a bit more for the Hobart 140
- Hobart 140 if i'm going to upgrade, i thinnk i should get a 230v as all the 120v's are similar.
- Hobart 187, finally a perfect machine! a bit expensive, but thats ok. wait.. you say it can't really weld aluminum? :mad2:
- Hobart 210 w/ spool gun, holey crap! this thing is awesome! but its sooooo expensive!

i basically waisted 2-3 weeks of my life jumping around all of those options, plus the option of just keeping the 90A. eventually, my main decision was that in the long run, if i want to weld 1/4" steel, and 1/8" aluminum, it would be cheapest to get the big welder.

so thats what i have been up to lately...... LOL

i'm 99 percent sure that is the same backplate used with the older tc's, the jack shaft itself may be a bit short, but you may be able to extend that with some good clamping and some 5/8" rod (if it even is too short). if you wan't to take some measurements of the back plate i would be happy to compare them to my tc for you.

one question, does the 8hp have an AC current electric starter? if so you would need an inverter to run off DC. or of course you could just plug it into an extension cord, LOL.
i will mention that the electric start is more of a novelty as long as the engine isn't too tough to start. could you possibly put the electric starter on the 9hp, or the 6hp? or are the parts not compatible?

sure, that would be great, well the jackshaft is 3/4" diameter and keyed, if that matters.

i just neeeda know how far apart they are. so measure from the center or the edge, i dont care. you may have just saved me alot of money!

ok,

- driven, without the sprocket, or nut holding it on, requires about 2.5" of length on the jack shaft.
- the center to center spacing between the center of the driver and driven is approximately 6.75".
- the driven is about 6 1/4" in DIA
- the outer side of the driver is about 4 7/8" in DIA
- the side of the driver closest to the engine is about 4 9/16" in DIA

make sure your crank is long enough ( my engine has a 2.3" long shaft). a TC also needs a 5/16" tapped hole in the end of the crank. if you need any other specific measurements let me now.

fowler, LOL! :roflol:

lycsailor17, i saw your PM i can answer it in a bit, gotta mow the lawn...

-i'm going to get the mini going
-i'm going to build a welding cart, table, and bench grinder stand
and make some money to afford it all! but best of all......
one of these babies should be at my doorstep in a week or so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wai: :2guns: :auto:  :D :drool5:

i'm kinda broke now, but who cares! its money well spent! i can weld almost anything i could ever want!
