Vertical conversion Running

I got bored and made this. 3.5hp briggs vertical to horizontal. I installed an oil dipper and tilted the carb. I ran it for 30min revving it up every once and awhile and its still running strong!

Atta boy! I did the same thing with a 3hp Briggs last weekend, only mine is older. I still have to get it running after 20 years of sitting on the rockpile. It fires, but the recoil needs some fixin before it'll run. How would a motor like that peform on a kart?

There would be no difference between that engine and any other 3.5 hp engine on a kart.

Lets say its for an offroading go kart with all that extra bouncing around you dont see any problems with it? If so I have only seen these done with the smaller hp engines has anybody done this with an 11hp or up?

Waste of money, unless the motor is free. You cant fit a clutch on it so its mostly for display. Push Mowers have 7/8 shafts

hey, thats cool, i thought of converting my 13.5hp briggs to vertical shaft, but there is no room for a dipper because there is a crankshaft counterweight set that just clears the connecting rod.

Easily remedied IF you know what to do.
I solved this problem 4 years ago.
The only down side is that 1" clutches are expensive.
Some push mowers have a 0.984375" (63/64's) shaft which can also be made usable.

File the shaft with the engine running. If you work slowly and carefully you should be able to make a clutch fit without destroying the shaft. You'll have to also cut a keyway, which can be done with a Dremel.

I was going to do this same project myself, but I have decided to build one good lawnmower engine out of two that have different problems. Harbor Freight engines are cheap enough.

Well I am going to put this motor on a aluminum frame BMX bike. My grandpa has a lathe so ill bring the shaft down to 3/4. I will start it after I finish my go kart and get more work on my mini bike.

Yeah, the lathe is obviously the best way. I shouldn't assume that people don't have access to good tools. If you have access to a lathe, you can build just about anything you need for a go kart. I need to get one myself one of these days.

Incidentally, people used to do all kinds of handiwork before excellent tools were so common. I've done all kinds of stuff with a dremel tool.
