I have nothing but great results with POR15. This is the one paint product that is truly amazing stuff. It is way tuffer than the best of Powder coat jobs. It is hard to explain if you never used it before. This is from POR15 web site.

POR-15® is a high-tech, high performance rust-preventive coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It dries to an incredible rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from further exposure to moisture.

Use it to coat rusty frames, floor pans, farm equipment, marine equipment, or even a heavily corroded battery tray.

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight.

Okay you may be asking it will not chip? Right right? Well this stuff does not chip. It scuffs but will not chip. and you can rub the scuffs out with your thumb to get a glossy finish again.

The reason I made this thread is this is the perfect stuff to paint Karts. You can brsuh it on with any brush or sponge. The POR15 wil self level to a gloss sattin finish. Heck you could even put it on with a SOS pad and it will leval out. You can use a roller as well. No need for spray guns and all that other stuff. I painted this mango dingo for about $50. It will never chip peel or fade again.

Some pics of a POR15 Dingo. (you can see my greasy fingers prints is these pics)

Okay Por15 must be top coated for it is UV sensitive. All you do is rattle can over the Por15. You must do it while the POR15 is still tacky. This way the top coat bonds with the por15.

Por15 is a tricky and weird product. It likes rusty metal not clean new shinny metal. On new karts you would have to sand blast to get por5 to bond right. WHEN USING POR15 YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INTRUCTIONS TO THE T OR YOU WILL FAIL. I PROMISS YOU THAT. AND DO NOT GET ANY OF IT ON YOU. IT WILL NOT COME OFF FOR 2 WEEKS. TRUST ME I KNOW.

The finish is not as deep as powder coat. If you want a show kart get the powder coat. But if you have a thrasher kart that you never want to paint again then use POR15. But Por15 has a product called HARDNOSE PAINT.

This is from POR15 web site

HARDNOSETMpaints are tough, glossy, two-component coatings for use over primed or painted surfaces.
They are moisture cured, so exposure to moisture and humidity will actually improve their performance and strength.

When fully cured, HARDNOSETM Paints are rock-hard, chemical resistant, non-porous, and incredibly tough. Durable and easily cleaned, they will not crack, chip, peel, or fade with age. HARDNOSETM Paints will withstand even the most intensive UV environments.

These beautiful, two-component coatings are stronger than any color paints you have ever tried. The long-lasting brilliant colors will look terrific wherever you use them, and will withstand incredible abuse. You'll be amazed and delighted at how well HARDNOSETM paints hold up under conditions that would quickly destroy ordinary finishes.

HARDNOSETM paints are also excellent for industrial applications. Use our safety yellow or orange colors on machinery guards or heavy equipment, and then stand back and marvel at how long they last under abuse.

Put HARDNOSETM Paints on the chassis of your car, truck, or motorcycle, and quit worrying about stone chips and gravel roads. You'll be amazed at the toughness!

I painted a vintage moped with hardnose. I picked this stuff for the moped would get gas spilled on the tank. Also the moped rides on the front bumper of a motorhome. So I wanted a paint job that would take the abuse of ridding on the front bumper. Well if I thought regular POR15 was amazing this stuff is more amazing. It looks like marble when done right. Or even as glossy a new kitchen sink. (I will post pics of the ped later).

You can use Hardnose over other paints and bare metal. But for best results use Hardnose over regular por15. You will get a perfect rollout with a deep satin finish. You will never have to worry about gas or brake fluid wrecking your paint job. If you need repair you just paint again.

Here is some random web shots of POR15 and hardnose. Remember this stuff is brushed on. Again amazing..

I painted some pipes with this stuff and beat with a hammer. The pipe smashed and the paint still did not peel or even chip. It was scuffed to hell sure. I painted a pop can and let dry. I smashed the pop can with no chipping or peeling. Amazing stuff. after Katrina Por15 took pics of cars that had por15 on the chassis. (hot rodders use this stuff) The Por15 cars that had por15 paint on the frames were still like new after salt water attack for over a year.

Bigheads tips

Only buy a pint. One pint did my hole dingo with some to spair.

You must use the por15 chems. (Marine clean & Metal ready No exeptions)

DO NOT GET ANY POR15 ON YOUR SKIN!!! FAIR WARNING

Sandblast if new cart or shinny smooth metal.

Rusty frames and parts just wire brush then use Por15 as instructed.

Some guys sanblast then let surface rust develope then por15.

Do many googles before you try this stuff. You have to get it right. Do not skip any of the instructions.

Use two coats. The first coat as light as you can. The 2nd medium coat will roll/level out perfect.

Look for the POR15 starter kit from POR15 web site. This is enough to do a kart and will save you big money for the bottles are smaller. Like this one. (paint your Kart for $24 plus shipping plus 3 rattle cans)

http://www.tcpglobal.com/AutoBodyDepot/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemNo=POR+SSKB

Paint your kart with Por15 for about $$35, Por15 and Hardnose for about $75. Then beat it smash it and bend it and still have a nice paint job. Best deal for the perfect restore or a tuff cheap paint job.

Anyone would think you were a sales man for the stuff! :roflol:

I've only heard good things about it (not that I've heard much about it though) I might have to get some and try it out, not much to loose if I don't like it really.

Thanks

Hayden

Not a sales man for sure. Just wanted to pass what I have found out with Por15. If done right you have a solid paint that will last for life. This stuff is perfect for karts and the DIY person. Anyone can do it with no need for spray guns.

Interesting! I think I heard of this stuff some years ago. I've never seen it for sale locally, though...

Good automotive paint stores will have it. You will have to order the hardnose though. Most places just carry the regular Por15.

The starter kits you can only get online. The starter lits would do a small frame kart or mini bike easy. It would not be enough to do the dingo above though.

When ordering remember Por15 goes a long way. A pint would do any and most go karts easy.

Por15 does not store well. Best to use it all at one time. So paint everything your painting at the same time.

Dont get any in the thread holes. It dries rock hard. If you do get some in the thread hole use Q-tip asap to clean hole.

So you can buy a pint of acrythane and the primer and activator for under $50? Not to mention the spray gun.

Perhaps it is cheaper for I do not know the prices for Acrythane paint. The main part about por15 is it it easy to use. No tools and is was tuffer than acrythane.

This silly imperial measurement system is giving me the craps,
I can get a litre of 2 pot acrythane with hardener for about $60 i think, im just saying its easier to apply and uv resistant, as far as i know you can apply it with a brush (never bothered usually use a spray gun), its what we use in the industry, do a lot of farm equipment, sandblast then acrythane it does chip if you really smash it other than that it skuffs like POR, anyway not meaning to cramp ya thread, just thought i might introduce another product, anyone used either, both? ive used POR15 for mags quite a bit because it can handle stones beating against it

Cheers, Cam.

I've used http://www.kbs-coatings.com.au Rustseal, which is basically POR-15 but better (apparently). It is made by someone who used to work at POR. I used it on the buggy and it has come off in one place where I put a heavy, rusty chain around the front of the frame and towed the buggy up a steep rough hill and around some corners. I doubt any paint would have survived that.

How would the acrythane hold up to my kids spilling gas all over everytime they put gas in? Por15 hardnose in not effected by gas or chemicals. Hardnose is also uv resistant.

After you bought your acrythane and hardner for $60 you would have the buy a two stage primer as well right? Clearcoat? Mixing, cleaning. Also I do not think acrythane has the same self leveling that Por15 does. I am not a painter and have no spray gun and more than likly don't know what I am talking about. But Por worked perfect for me on the 65 nova so I was sold on it already. For me and my painting skills por15 worked perfect. I will paint everything with it from now on.

If you use the Por15 on wheels you may want to try Hardnose next time. It has the deep powder coat finish. Not the normal por15 black look. They say if you use both Por15 and hardnose you will have the super finish.

I got a moped I did with hardnose. I will post some pics soon. it rides on the bumper of a motorhome with no chipping so far. Spilled gas does not effect it.

I know I am sounding crazy on this stuff. But when I painted those pipe and beat the hell out of them with a hammer and still had okay looking paint. I was just amazed. I did the underside of my Nova with it. it has been 4 years now and looks like the day it was done. Just wanted to pass it on.

Peace

Can you beat it with a hammer and not chip it? Can you dump chemicals and brake fluid on it with no damage? Can you brush it on with no need for primer or spray guns? That being said I have not used 2 pot acrythane. I know it is also very hard stuff though. But do not think it would hold up the abuse that Por15 can. I have had things powder coated. Por is much tuffer stuff.

Here is a moped I did with Por15 Hardnose. You can se the camera flash but you get the idea. I could shoot it with a bb gun all day and have zero damage. it is like powder coat in a can. You brush it on and you see no brush marks. I never have to worry about spilling gas on this tank ever again. Check it out..

Acyrythane is acrylic urathane, it is chemically and corrosively resistant,at the engineering shop i work at we use acrythane because it is the best value for money, easy clean up, spray brush or roll and provides a one off semi gloss/gloss/flat finish.

In know way is it as hard, tough, durable, chemically and corrosively resistant as por 15

But in no stretch of the imagination is it as cheap as acrythane and that is my point.

As a personal opinion, i would paint my karts and projects in acrythane because its cheap and i can get it through my work.

That is an opinion everyone is intitled to theirs as well,

some people might like painting their projects in laquer, because its also cheap and can be hard when clear coated, leaves a nice finish and is easy to clean up,

on the other hand some people might like to paint their projects with enamel, it
is hard, covers well, self levels and can be applied with a brush and get good results,

Some people might paint their karts in hammerite, it is very hard, easy to paint desent require any primer or clean metal, and leaves a hamered finish which looks good.

So what im saying is this thread should be titled, more like "What paint do you guys use?" because not everyone uses por 15, and not everyone powder coats.

Cheers, Cam.
