We typically idle karts with centrifugal clutches to 1700 rpm and karts with torque converters to 1900 rpm. The theoretical governed speed of most small 4 stroke engines sits at 3600 rpm.

Blaz, why would you set a higher idle on a TC-equipped engine?

For our purposes this is on customer karts typically where they only start the kart once a month and need the idle higher to stay running. The karts can idle higher due to a higher engagement, below 2200 it should only be creeping unless someone has fooled with the tension or springs. On a kart that just uses a centrifugal chain drive clutch the clutch can easily be fully engaged at this point and trying to run across the parking lot at 2200 rpm so we stay below 1800.

1400 is scary low for idle, I understand Honda makes an amazing engine and has the ability to idle at this point but i'd rather have it sitting at 1700.

reminds me of cars now a-days compared to 20yrs ago.

Exactly. Some things i understand, like ABS and traction control, but drive by wire makes no sense to me. Thats why one of my many goals in life is to never own a car built after 1985. Not sure how feasible that is, but id like to restore old cars, boats, and tractors for a living so it shouldnt be too hard.

Ahh, I see. Thanks. Thought there was some kinda voodoo going on! I just set my idle by ear, and didn't want to miss anything...
