Ok i bought a used Yerf-Dog model 3020 off craglist with 2 other things another go kart which doesn't run right now and a baja doodle bug for 600$ all together.

But the yerf dog is missing the air filter box at first it wouldn't start and had too put some starting fluid in it and it started but kept dieing out so the lady called her son and ask him what is wrong and he said it needs the filter and air filter too stay running because its getting too much air.

So we found the old air filter pad and i just stuck that in the hole and that got it running with out starting fluid and it will run if i keep revving it, Didn't take it for a ride yet because its in back of my pickup now. Will give it a try later today.

She said she ordered the air filter box with the air filter about a month but didn't get it in yet because the place said it was back ordered so she said she will call us if it comes in, But i don't really want too wait, Because i like too take it up in the mountains this weekend at my aunts.

But were can i get the air filter box from? or can i somehow mod or buy a aftermarket one?

Other than that everything seems fine and it also have a new clutch put in also.

Thanks:)

Oh it does have the 5.5hp Tecumseh motor.

pics would help

u can buy a pod air filter, which will not solve the too much air issue but at least it is an air filter
u will need a bigger jet in the carboretor

we need the type of engine to find a stock air filter but finding a stock one wont be hard

I get some pics when my camera charges.

Also it seems like the fitters are easy too get but the main problem is the air filter housing. i cant seem too find the part.

But i pretty sure its a techumseh Power Sport 5.5hp stock engine.

I contacted bmikarts.com and ask them will these work sense it looks like the same on pics and they said yes.

But they said they cant say if it wil fix my problem with the go kart stalls out and wont idle...

I got it too drive up my street hill couple hours ago but i had too keep pumping the pedal most of the time too get up it, than i had a hard time getting it too stay running after that..

does anyone think its because of the air filter and box? The guy that owned this before said it was because of that stuff missing and after that we tried a air filter that was laying around and stuff it in there and it started right up but wouldn't stay running, I just don't want too pay for those now and it doesn't fixed the problem even tho i will buy them later on if its not the problem sense i know it needs those too protect the engine.

But ya it has alot of power at first when i get it running but seems like it floods it self out or something.

I know my dirtbikes will start up fine with out a air filter but those are much different engines.

what does anyone think i should do order those?

I wonder if its the carb needs clean even tho he said he cleaned it with carb cleaner and the gas tank was empty at first when he left it sit for like 3months so i would think it would be fine but not really sure..

Oh i forgot too mention that when i hold in the primer bulb push thingy it will pretty much stay running till i leave go and it wants too die out till i pump the primer.. What does that mean? carb needs clean?...

It seems like after i started it couple times and revved it couple times too keep it running for couple min its getting a bit better and seems too start alot faster now and sometimes it will idle 5 too 10secs on its own and that's with out holding the primer in, I would order both filter and the box right now if i knew that would help too make it stay running, Does anyone know how this engine acts with out a air filter and will it do this with out the filter and box? Be nice if someone else has this engine and would tell me if it will do this problem with out them.

Heres my kart in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcxELr3-S20

good luck!

I posted some stuff up above you but you beated me:)

I see you have your air filter off and box and it runs... So its not them making it not stay running:( Mine still has that air filter plate on mine still i see you have yours off do you think that would cause a problem? I hate too hear that the carb needs cleaned because i never cleaned a carb before on anything.. Would carburetor cleaner spray or something you can put in the gas tank would clean it?

i own two tecumseh engines, one is a yerf dog kart. Both of my engines seemed to run almost perfect after having the carb rebuilt. I'm willing to bet that your carb is 99 percent of the problem. I've done tons of reading about the engines.
I have a 5.0 and 6.5

Ya probably is the carb, Today i went out and tried too get it running like i had it last night and it had a hard time starting,So i got fed up and took the carb off and cleaning as i type this,Its my first time but it doesn't seem hard at all just have too remember were everything goes lol

K i cleaned the carb which wasn't that bad but put it back together and it still doesn't stay running but it does have much more power now, But than i holded the carb flap for the gas pedal open little and it stayed running so i think it just needs the idle screw up little now.

If everything is as it should be, it should run well without the filter (box, whatever). Your carb needs servicing. A good and thorough cleaning should take care of it. I have heard that some Tecumseh carbs are sensitive to stale fuel and have a tendency to gum up. Once you've got it cleaned up and running well, make it a practise to not leave fuel in the carb. Today's gasolines break down rather quickly, so the best thing (IMO) you can do is everytime you're going to park it for more than a couple of days, run the carb dry. While the engine is idling, turn off the fuel valve and let it run 'till it quits. Just for good measure, I like to give the rope a few pulls after that to make sure it's empty. Personally, I do this every time I park it for more than a few hours.

This info might help, too- http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10957

Ony thing this engine doesn't have a fuel shut off valve.. what about if i pull the hose and plug the hose so gas wont come out? Than run the carb dry.

But i have some good news tho that i got it too idle and i took it for a ride and it drives really nice, What it needed is the idle screw turn up just a bit after that it runs till i turn off the kill switch:) Im sure cleaning the carb helped too.

I also found a filter and a adapter off a dead lawn motor that fits perfect on it:)

Also were can i find those pins that connects too the carb throttle flap than too the gas pedal spring? When i was taking it off i misplace it somehow.. And right now im using a paper clip which works so far but would like too get a replacement pin.

That would work. You can also buy fuel valves pretty cheap at a lawnmower-type (OPE) shop.

You could try the same shop you're buying the valve at!:roflol:
A bit of decent wire might be better than a paperclip, but whatever works!
