Hi im new to the group and after almost week googling searching you tube and other sites this site pops up alot so i thought i would join :) ..... last week my dad picked up a yerf dog 3203 for free from a guy he knows. been sitting outside for 2 years. guy said all it needed was a belt ... so later that day i got home to check it over . it has the tecumseh 6.5 hp engine and guess comet torque converter bc thats whats stamped on it ..... he picked this up thinking i would want it for my two boys ( which i do duh) anyways i looked it over the gas tank was dry and clean as could be... so lets try an see if it starts ... i put a new spark plug in it . checked the oil ( did not change yet ) put some gas in it ... after countless pulls i got nothing but sore arm ... i bought new carb and it fired right up :) wow i got lucky . so i put the new belt on. everything seemed good . took it for a ride before i let my kids ride it of course .. brakes dont hardly stop ..figured it needed new brake band and possibly drum . i pulled the wheel off and engeged the brake seems like if i can tighten the brake cable up a little it should fix the problem (not sure) . also i noticed the belt started smoking after riding ( my kids are you so the gas wasnt hammered the full time lots of slow riding which i just read is hard on clutch :( .also i noticed when i put belt on it had little slack which its suppose to but after couple times riding it the belt its extremely loose . i can even take the belt off now without taking the pulley off why is that when i couldnt before? also i noticed some yerf dog 3203 have 4 " drums while other 3203 have 6" drums ... mine has 4" drums . do i need to put 4" drums back on or can i put 6" or do i need new cable to run 6 " drums? so heres some issues i need advice on ......

1. can the brake cable be tightened up? if so how?
2.how can i get it to not burn my belt up for slow take offs and putting around for the kids?
can i get rid of the comet torque converter and just have some other type of drive to power this kart?

recent parts bought and installed are as follows :

MaxPower 10052 Replacement Go Cart Belt for Comet 203591, Yerf Dog Q43103W, Q43203W and Kartco 7655

CARBURETOR FOR TECUMSEH 640025 OHH55 OHH60 OHH65

new air filter

parts i have ordered but not arrived yet .....

473441-2 Torque Converter for #41 Chain, 3/4" Bore (TAV2 Replacement)

473725 TAV2 Replacement Drive Belt

Also ordering soon new brake drum and brake band depending what everyone says i should do .... also getting new #40 chain 70 link ....

by the way i was reading about the torque converter it seems to have the green spring. would it be better to buy the yellow spring for my kids riding it? not sure what the difference is

:useless: I'm afraid...
We need to see the issues to give good advice..

Like
Why do you think you ned a new TC?
a bit elbow grease and maybe $20 in spares will fix nearly any comet TC out there..
PLUS the original comet is about two to three times better than the chinese clone you ordered.
so even if you spend the same 130 for spare parts you still end up with the higher quality system in the end.

burning up belts is about 90% bad gear ratio and 10% misuse.

IF your kids don't like to go fast gear lower (more teeth in the back) to slow the kart down, then given them advice to use the kart properly ...

Why did you throw away your old carb and buy a new one when you could have cleaned it out i cleaned mine out after 14 years and it runs perfectly now

i still have my old carb... i tried cleaning it and still a no go .. i took the air box off and closed the hole to the carb with my thumb and it would start with engine starter but had to keep thumb covering hole to keep it running and feather the throttle bc if not it would die. so i knew it was carb problem . so figured since cleaning the carb didnt fix it i would just buy new carb for 15 bucks and call it a day .

most brake cables I've seen can be tightened up to a point..
if you'rs is one that can be tightened (any further or at all) will have to be seen from the pics I'm afraid.

basically you can (if it's just one cable) either tighten one end, both end, via a setscrew (like on a bicycle) or by shortening one side (mostly the front end) and reattaching it to the pedal.
sometimes it bracket for the brake band offers you to tighten the cable.

Again.. likely possible, but to be sure we'll need a pic ;)

Also show us the TC you have (in out front back.. etc.) maybe it just needs a minor adjustment, like new rubber stops, maybe a good clean *shrugs*
again.. without a picture nearly impossible to tell ;)

For now I'd say do not buy anything yet until we know what's wrong with it
(just to safe some money if possible)
Remember this is DIY not JBIN (just buy it new) ;)

Oh I forgot earlier:
:welcome2: make yourself at home, it's nice in here..
coffee's on the counter :D

[EDIT]
Bird don't ;) .. read carefully.. TECUMSEH...
different carb, sometimes known to be impossible to clean, sometimes it just needs to be replaced.

rob, be carefull with replacing more parts on the Tec though.. IIRC parts can be utterly expensive and justify buying a new predator engine at HarbourFreight (~$99 new 6.5hp engine; I think you spend likely 40-50 for the carb already ;))

here are some photos .... in one pic you see part of the tc .. it has a brass ring on it that the belt sits on.. that ring does NOT move it should shouldnt it???? i soaked it in penatrating oil still doesnt come off :( also included is pics of the brake cable i have no clue what to adjust to make it tighter bc these brakes do NOT stop unless i have 40 yards to slow down ... so the brake drum is 4" do i need a 4.2" brake band????

PLUS the original comet is about two to three times better than the chinese clone you ordered.
Is it really that big of a difference? :lolgoku:

Regarding the chinese TAV2/30 series, the only problem that I'm aware of (and can confirm) is this:
... and yes I 'do' have the knockoff. I cant 'compare' it to an original Comet( seeing as that Ive never owned one)... but the 'only' thing that Ive noticed in a difference w/ the Comet is the knock off has a 3/16" key(integrated), and the Comet has a 1/4" key(integrated). The 1/16" off gives the knock off a very distinct 'noise'. To the untrained ear, upon start, an engine will have a 'clanging' sound, almost sounds like a rod about to be ejected...

my TC might be good if you look in the first pic the brass ring the belt sits on doesnt slide, move, spin. nothing .. doesnt even move at all so with that being said i think with it not sliding further back and being rusted in place im thinking its not allowing the belt/clutch to fully engage and burning the belt/clutch .. just a idea but **** not sure if its even suppose to slide off or whatever . im new to gokarts so any help would be great

Please don't apologize for legitimate questions....that's what we are here for. ...and legitimate only means you don't know and want an answer. ....there are no stupid questions....except the one you forgot to ask......

I don't think so on the cable....but wait for someone more experienced with that kart........

after researching little deeper i think im going to take the cable off and measure it . bmi sells 18", 19" and up so long as the measurements are same i believe it should work .. i hope lol .... also bmi is out of stock on the 4" drums can someone recomend another site that sells 4" brake drums and bands? i tried amazon but no luck and found one guy on ebay but looks kinda shady

also like stated earlier at begining of the thread i have the new TC Complete kit coming in the mail this week ... i know i know i should clean the old one . well i know nothing bout these or how to clean them well i found a video on youtube and you guys are right. comparing mine to what the guy describes in video and none of my parts move freely at all so i currently have them soaking over night hoping after work they will break free and i can begin to brush them down .... hmm i just might have a new TC boxed waiting to be used eventually as a spare . :|
