I just bought an old Yerf Dog frame off craigslist for $150. I think it's model 3002 but not sure. It was in pretty bad condition, missing the engine, rear wheels, hubs, and almost every bolt had rusted and seized. The front wheels were trashed. It even had two mismatching shocks on it XD

It took me hours to get the axle, steering wheel, and spindles off because the nuts were stuck so bad. However I can't get the brake drum and a bearing off of the 1" axle no matter what I do. The bearing has the set screws removed but the inner race is stuck on the axle. The brake had two set screws, one of which I got out, but the other seems to not have a hex key in it? I tried dremeling a slot in it so I could use a flathead to get it out but no such luck.

Anyways I got the whole frame sanded and repainted desert tan. Just need help with a couple things.

1) How should I get the bearing off? I was thinking getting a metal pipe large enough to fit around the axle but not the race and then hitting that with a sledgehammer.

2) For the brake would drilling through that set screw be a good idea?

3)It has a 60 tooth #40 sprocket. I'm getting the Harbor Freight 212cc. Due to money constraints i am going to buy used golf cart rims and tires off craigslist. They are 18" diameter on 4 on 4" bolt pattern. I'm using a 10 tooth clutch because I can't afford a torque converter. I really cannot afford to drop ~$30 on a jackshaft setup. Will this 6:1 ratio burn out my clutch with these tires? I don't care how slow it accelerates, as long as it won't break my clutch.

4)Would these make good front wheels given new bearings?

5)Where can I find new nuts for the 5/8" inch spindles and 1" axle?

Thanks all

After a proper drenching in penetrating oil & cleaning the rust off the rest of the axle, that should work...

2) For the brake would drilling through that set screw be a good idea?

Yep

Hmm, that's pushing it, gearing shoud be closer to 8:1 on 18's...

I'm gonna leave that for someone else a bit closer to you

5)Where can I find new nuts for the 5/8" inch spindles and 1" axle?

Fastenall, lowes maybe...

Welcome to the forum, it appears you're doing well with the old yerf

Thanks for your input. With the ratio though, I'm just trying to get the kart moving for now and gear it down when I have more money. Do you think the clutch will fail at 1:6? If so could I adjust the clutch engagement somehow so it lasts longer?

I think I am going to order a wheel from there. Wow that is cheap. Hopefully it works and shipping won't be much.

I was thinking along the same lines with the wheels, they're not as flimsy as the HF version but, still not great...

Honestly, I think you'll have problems with that gear ratio & a cent clutch; IIRC, yerf dogs came standard with a torque converter, hence the 60t sprocket & big wheel combo...

Have a look in the for sale section & craigslist, there may be a used TC floating around...

Thanks Fabroman. I'll get that ratio lower...somehow.

Anyways I don't know what this guy was thinking with the shocks. They aren't even the same length so I put the longer one on the drivers side so it should even out :wai::2guns:

Both of those shocks are adjustable; if you adjust the short one to the highest level & the long one to the lowest level, the may just even out...

Hey guys I decided I'm going to install a jack shaft with 16 tooth input and 12 tooth output for a 8:1 ratio. What would be better 5/8" OD or 3/4" OD? It makes sense a 3/4" would be more durable but for some reason 5/8" seems to be more standard...
