HELLO EVERYONE 
My name is Tarkis Cooper (i know it's strange, just let it go...) and i have a bit a of problem.
For year 12 at school (next year) we are required to do a subject called the 'research project' (not that fun). As it goes, my idea at the moment is to revamp an old (electric) go kart i had as a child:

i never really used mine much when i was younger but here is a bit of information that i could find:
24volt 180Watt motor (most likely dead now)
2x 12volt 7ah batteries (dead now 'wont charge')
and a 24volt Urban X branded controller
Also it has a button on the steering wheel that did engage the engine, without this button being pressed down 24/7 it wouldn't go (honestly no idea how, i followed the cord and it just vanishes...) it is one wheel drive (rear right) and all of the wheels are solid plastic
i have already read the main post about electric motors/batteries and ratings and realistically these are my goals:
1) swap all wheels for rubber inflated tires.
2) get new and better engine. at the moment i am looking at a 36volt 1000Watt engine. i'm not sure it the cart would be able to take this load with me on it without breaking the frame. from what i remember it was very strong and i can bounce up and down on it now confidently.
3) make it 2 wheel drive. from what i can see (and with my limited knowledge this doesn't look too hard. the axle at the back is split into two, the side that the engine is attached to has a nut and two washers sticking out the other side (facing the rear left wheel. and it shouldn't be to hard to fix up.
4) probably new breaks... common sense.
5) new batteries. from what i can tell i'l need 1000/36 ah (27.778ish)
that is all i can think of at the moment but because of this stupid subject i need to document everything and write essay after essay on what i'm doing and the choices i make.
my father (was a mechanic) suggested that for a starting point we go down to town and find a hobby shop that can give us some initial information and ideas to follow. while i am required to make documentation of everything this doesn't mean that i can't bulls#@t my way through all of the considerations (eg: petrol) as i have basically decided on what i would like the specs and everything to be.
i would very much appreciate any advice and hopeful instructions on how to go about this project and what steps to take.
i live in Australia so time zones might be a bit of an issue but that's why i'm starting early :3
also a little about me:
i am 17 and have a general interest in engineering (most likely robotic or computer) but i also believe that i can handle this project. unfortunately i don't have any experience with welding but the fact that the frame is already done is very helpful. i'm not expecting this go kart to last for ever nor do i want it to take too much time. the SACE board (markers) only look at the research that went into the idea. they honestly don't care if it works or was even made.
but i do need to do this to pass year 12.

P.S.S. i'm not that fussed by the price, so long as it isn't crazy expensive. eg, the engine i was looking at was $100 not $1000
