Hey guys,

After coming home from uni I found to my surprise the neighbours were getting rid of a Yamaha 175 motor bike. I was pleased to take it having only concerns with the engine. The bike its self has many salvageable parts but the engine is what I really need. Unfortunately It looks pretty messed up and I have little knowledge on motor bike engines.

I was wondering if anyone could give me a hand with telling me what I'm looking at here and whether it can be fixed. If anyone knows the stats on this bikes engine that would also be great, from what I've tried to dig up from the internet I believe its a 14hp, 1 cylinder, 2 stroke engine. I could be wrong tho ;)

Regards,

Shane

Thanks for the info Kenny! I'll give these pieces a look up to find out the costs

I haven't checked for compression and I'm not sure how. Is it possible for me to check for compression with these parts missing or would they have to be replaced first? Also where do I got to check the bearings? Sorry if I'm asking for so much, I'm new to all this but learning quickly.

Thanks,

Shane

Dont need fly or stator to test compression, just hook up the tester and kick it over a few times. To check bearings without taking the engine apart, grab the crank with your hand and try to wiggle it, shouldn't move at all, then take the plug out and turn it over, should sound smooth, any rough or grinding noise is bad.

If i were you, i'd keep it as a bike. I've had the most fun on those old enduros.

Looks to me like its a 1970's DT175, prolly around 75' or 76'.

Shane, did you get any of the removed parts from your neighbour?

Also did they have any info about what kind of problem they were having when they disassemble it?

ps:
Looks like that bikes been sitting for quite awhile, you might pour a little oil down your spark plug hole, then elevate the front of the bike up to make sure your coating the whole piston/cylinder surfaces, and then kick it over a few times (w/spark plug out) This will help the rings seal to the bore and give you a more accurate compression test.

Those parts are probably expensive, imagining you will only find them on ebay. Good luck

I did a rough test of compression today, by just kick starting it lol (didn't start of course). It sounded like it has compression but ill do the thumb over the spark plug trick and add some oil to test for sure. The crank seems tight and I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "take the plug out and turn it over" I do know that the piston sounds smooth as it moves then again I have nothing to compare it too lol, sounds smooth to me tho. I was tempted to keep the bike at first but it would take a fair amount of work to get it fixed and a go kart will be fun to make :p

I didn't talk to the neighbours, but I'm pretty sure they have a few bikes and probly stripped this one I now have, and used the parts to get another of their bikes working. Hence why it was for free on the side of the road. Thats my guess.

Thats' my next issue if compression is good, ill look into parts. Hope they aren't too pricey because of this bikes age :S

Any one know of any websites that sell spare parts of motorcycles in Australia? or have tips and hints to getting cheap parts for this kinda engine?

Thanks for your help so far guys
