One of my friends took the gears out of a bike. When I say gears I mean the whole setup. The type where you can change the gears. It has 8 gears. And he implemented this into his go kart. So now he can change his gears (ratios) while he is driving it. Great Ideal and it works!!

What kind of motor does he have? This has been thought of, but the chains are quite weak in comparison to standard kart sizes and is usually avoided for that reason, but if it works for him, great!

My 6.5hp engine would shred bike running gear in about 5 minutes.

Might work with tiny <50cc engines though.

Many of us have thought of that- And then thought better of it. Although I don't think it would be very durable, I'd like to see some pics and/or video.

Considering Ive popped chains riding my Bike down hills, ect, ect. I Would be deathly afraid of something like this on a kart... I'm no expert, at go-karts/mini-bikes or what ever. But I am at bicycles, So When I say. This is a death trap. I believe that its a very bad idea, unless you can get Stronger chain/bigger. and different gears that are bigger and stronger too. Even with the best bike chains.. sometimes you got that one ****ty link, that you hit that one rock at an angle. and POP! that goes right into your leg! ouch!

He has a 8 hp motor. He did upgrade the chain to something stronger but the gears are stock. So far it has survived off road driving for about 2 weeks and it still looks new. Ill work on the pcs and vids.

I wouldn't consider it a death trap, so much as tow truck fodder. Unless your brakes are on the clutch or jackshaft, a broken chain isn't likely to kill you. I would be concerned about how many times a day I'd have to push my kart, though.

Given that the spacing between multi-speed bicycle sprockets has to be very specific, I'd certainly be interested in hearing about the "upgrade" chain...

Just a a little stronger chain he got at the hardware store. Same size but its a lot heavier than the stock chain.

Hardware store chain could be very questionable. How about a performance racing bike chain?

Nope he got it at ace hardware. Not broken after 2 weeks of heavy duty off road riding.

It works even better than when its on a bike.. It shifts instantly. Another think to look at is the quality of bike you actually got the setup from. His was a trek bike. Which I think is a high quality bike.

Hmmm...

Bicycle Derailleur and chain running off a 8hp powerplant...
...worked for 2weeks in off-road conditions you say?

We are talking about bicycle gear right?

X2

I know guys who have shredded derailer setups with their legs. I think those have quite a bit less than 8HP.

The chain isn't the weak part, well actually it is, but generally the sprockets and derailer itself are weaker. Also, mountain bike chain is made to flex to allow the gear shift, other chain isn't. With other kinds of chain changing gear becomes very difficult.

Pics and vid or it didn't happen mate.

it has occured to me, but it would put a lot of strain on the chain, and you can't make the chain to much bigger than a bike chain and still fit on the sprocket. also your friend must have been using a very high quality sprocket.
