Would a 60t sprocket give me any take-off power?

On the calculator I used on here gave me this answer: 15" tires , 3600 rpm , 60t sprocket , 12t clutch = 32moh...If I get that I'll be happy...The calculator is pretty accurate according to my GPS...On the go-kart I have now I have the same set-up with the exception of a 72 t sprocket and according to the GPS it does 26.7 mph with an aftermkt. air cleaner and no muffler ...I'm just hoping the 60t sprocket will give me 32 mph or close to it on the new kart we are making now...I have an extended warranty (2 yrs) on the HF engine if I don't get the desired speed I want I'll remove the governor and if it blows up I'll take it back , they told me I can take the engine back within that 2 yr. period if anything happens to it....I really don't want to take the governor off as that will make it too fast this kart is supposed to be for my 7 yr. old grandson (maybe I'll give him the other 1 ) ...We just ride it on the street or an empty parking lot after they close at night ...I think it's more fun to build it and calculate all this stuff and the satisfaction of saying "I made that"...Bob

We kind of have the same project going.

I have tires 6.5" from ground to center of axle (13") w/54/10 gearing on a 10% od TQ. It takes a LOT of open space to hit the governor and when I do its 31-32mph. I could not hit the governor with larger tires and had slow acceleration and lower top speed. I ditched the throttle stop screw to pick up a few more rpm over 3600 (like 4000-4100rpm?).

Fyi: my tires only measured 11" uninflated, 14.5 inflated, 13 rolling diam with weight on them.

Ditching the throttle stop set screw really picked it up. I can now open throttle so far the arm hits metal and I took off the air filter plastic, opened the choke, and opened the trhottle all the way while looking in it w/a flashlight to verify it was opening all the way----No---not while the engine was running!

My next step is bigger jet, header, air filter. If it gives it enough power to hit the governor easier I may gear up to 11 or 12t which as long as the engine can still top out will really bump up top speed.

I don't think Ill want to go faster than that (safety) so might not remove the governor. We'll see though one step @ a time.

I would say that you are pretty much on the borderline with regards to what the clutch will be able to handle before getting fried. You have a ratio of 60/12 = 5:1. This is a little high, but you can maybe get away with it if your kart and rider are not too heavy.

A word of warning....if you remove your governer, you will probably not be able to return the engine if something happens. Removing internals or modifying anything usually voids the warrenty. If they cant tell that you have done anything though, you will probably be fine
