it should have spark if it ran and by run i mean it popped loudly a few times like it was going to start

If it popped, then it probably has spark. There are 3 things that an engine needs to run, spark, fuel and air. If you have spark, then it is more likely a fuel delivery issue. Pour a spoon of gas down the spark plug hole, put the plug back in and try start the engine. Does it run for a second or two? If so, then give the carb a proper clean again, making sure all the tiny holes are poked out and clean. Check all the jets to make sure they are not clogged

Have a look at THIS link to find your carb. You can then follow the instructions on how to clean the carb properly. The Tecumseh carbs are near the bottom of the page

I had a powersport 6hp a while back as well. The carbs are poorly made. If there is even a small crack in the primer bulb it will NOT start. Save yourself the time and money and buy a new carb. The E-tube in the powersport I had was plastic, and overall the carb was of poor quality. I personally didn't think the power sport was all that loud, but to each their own I guess. If you can buy a new spark plug or regap the one in the engine now. I believe the size spark plug is CJ-8 but I could be wrong, double check. Also make sure your idle screw isn't too far and that its getting too much air. If you get a new carb, they'll (mine did at least) also have an additional fuel mix screw.

I bought my carb on ebay from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251491019770

Double check this is the right model for your engine.
