my 3.5 hp briggs and stratton wont start! i think its the thing that makes the spark and sends it to the spark plug but its hard wired to the engine and i dont know if i can change it so id it possible and if so can i cut that wire and solder the wire of the new one on it?

Before you start cutting things. Pull the plug out and ground it to the engine (by touching it to the frame while holding on to the insulation) to see if you have a spark. If you only have a pull start this is more difficult to do by yourself. It's easier to use an inline spark tester like one of these from a local autoparts store and a dark room. OEM-In-line-ignition-spark-tester

I'd try a different plug in case the one you have is broken internally. I've had that happen putting on new plugs in hard to reach places if the socket gets off center.

If that doesn't work, take off the shroud and start looking at the wire back to the coil.

If you know the model number, I think you can get manuals off the B&S website if you don't have one.
