Should be :lolgoku: ! It's obvious I didn't do my homework when my son asked for a go-kart for his birthday.

Thanks! :cheers2:

Hey- who could possibly fault you? He wanted a kart, you got him one. Makes you a top-drawer mom in my book!

As for homework, we can't possibly expect anyone not in the know, to be able to figure these things out ahead of time.

For what it's worth, I had a similar kart, and converted it to a live axle (also added suspension, but that isn't relevant here) and got good off road performance with a 12:1 ratio and a centrifugal clutch with 15 inch tires. I have since switched to a CVT, 18 inch tires, and a 6:1 ratio. If you want to see the build thread to give you an idea of what a live axle change would involve, you can check it out.

If it were my kart, I would probably first try and change out the axle sprocket for a 80T one. It should not be too hard to do. Just make sure that you buy the same pitch sprocket as the one that you have on your clutch. With a 8:1 gear ratio I personally think you should be OK.

To find out what the diameter of the sprocket would be, you could have a look at these charts depending on the chain pitch you have

If you keep the one you have, add a chain guard. In fact, if you sell it - add a chain guard. For the little cost you are protected against "My daughter got her hair caught in the chain of the go kart you sold me and was hurt. My Attorney will be in touch". Likely to happen? No, but the small cost of adding a chain guard is worth it.
