first cart project. i purchased 2 Honda minimoto's that i am converting to gas engines. going to use the HF predator engine. as of now my boys are 7 and 4.

witch would be a better engine for the cart? the 79cc 3hp or the 212cc 6.5 hp? cart will be used on flat terrain with 10" tires, 10T and 60T sprockets. putting the top speed at 18 mph if the calculators are correct.

i am concentrating on one cart at this time. the other will be a rather involved build for hopefully next year.

It's like asking "would you let a teenager loose in a new Mustang?" Young kids are inexperienced &, as a result, have no idea how to handle lots of power:
My 9yo daughters heavy kart runs on a 3hp B&S engine with 12:1 gearing; she handles it nicely
My lightweight kart runs on a 6hp Honda engine with 6:1 gearing; there's NO WAY I'd let her loose in it...

In short, get the 79cc until they're a bit older

Just brought up images of a kart powered by broom sticks and black magic

I'd run the smaller engine for your kid
Better be safe than sorry

thanks for the input guys. as for inexperience, at the age of 6 my boy can drive my wife's atv with me on the back by himself. he knows throttle control and braking very well for his age. we are just new to karting.

79cc it is.

Watch how fast it goes, those are so short that when you do a quick turn it has some snap to it. Heres my build of one. Approximately 20mph. Disregard the first pics as they were just factory ones.

i saw your thread a few months ago when i bought the karts. you did a nice job

i feel the steering is a little snappy as stated. this will be addressed as well. i will start a separate thread for the build.

I am hoping to find another one to do a better one, those frames are build real tough and can handle alot

Why not get the 6.5hp and limit the throttle with the screw? you could limit it to the point where the clutch just begins to engage, but then if you would like to ride it you could back out the screw in a couple of seconds and have full throttle power. this would be better because you would only have to make a motor mount once and as they get older you can unlimit it more and more

i noticed how well built the frames are and this is why i plan to mod the second kart.

i have NO desire to ride this kart. WAY too small, after i finish the second kart for the boys i may have to build one for myself

ok. i am finding mixed reviews on the shaft size of the 79cc predator engine. nothing is listed on HF's site. anyone know for sure so i can get the clutch ordered?
